2011 X3 = Lexus = New 3?

What if they do this do the new 3? from Edmunds

The Latte Factor
To categorize people into Type-A, -B, -Z drivers is unfair. We all have mood swings and priorities that dictate the way we're driving at any particular moment. That said, this X3 is not intended for the Type-A driver looking for compromise. The throttle issues and the fuel-economy-upping hypergearing (we managed 19.5 mpg combined) add up to a car that is significantly less fun on the road than it could be. It may be able to overpower the rear wheels for some hatch-out-hooning, but that's a rare case.

Instead, the X3 xDrive35i is for the late-for-soccer-practice-and-latte set. Drive it with kid gloves and it's a serene ride that feels as expensive as it is. The interior is expertly built, supremely comfortable and if you already know how to work a BMW interior, logically laid out. It's one of the more pleasant places to spend time with the family that doesn't involve a TV.

Just don't expect it to be the Ultimate Driving Machine. After all, BMWs are about Joy now, and Joy isn't about responsive driving dynamics or throttle response. Joy, it turns out, is about isolation and comfort and in that, the 2011 BMW X3 excels.

Nah, I've heard the contrary in some reviews...

Either way, in my book, an SUV should not handle like a sports car, even if it's a city "SUV"... the only car where this is acceptable is the X6, other than that, I want my off-road to behave more like a Defender than a Ferrari

...even though the only time you will take it "off road" is when all the parking spots are taken up at the soccer field and you have to park it on the grass next to the other cars.

idk how boring an suv that can go 0-60 in 5.5 seconds could be.

wth is this guy talking about.

how can an suv handle like a 335i coupe for instance....its physics. but if you'd compare the x3 to lets say rx 350 (i know its bigger), or even a toyota rav4, i'd think the x3 can out corner either of these suvs. its all relative.

I think Edmunds makes an interesting case in regards BMW marketing Joy over the Ultimate Driving Machine though. I think this was also relevant in the post in regards to the 5 series and the Infiniti that was up. It was argued that the 5 series has lost its nimble prowess to an ever growing line of BMW's (3's, 5's and 7's) and I agree with that.

But hey isn't there rumors of an X3 M out there somewhere? That would be type A personality for sure.

Well, think of the new 3-series as replacement for old 5 series. The 1 series taking over as sporty and nimble BMW.

With a 110.5 inch wheelbase it is just 0.9 inch shorter than a 2003 5 series. After studying the new X3 closely I believe the new 3 series will be very close to X3, they may even start building it in US in the same factory at some point.

The previous generation X3 especially earlier models were very stiff. It was beating me up. You would get tired of driving in 1-2 hours, seriously.
