Navigation went out.

So i am driving and i press the Nav button on my idrive controller. A message appears that says "this function currently not active" when i press the menu button, it shows me all the available functions but the word navigation is written in gray letter so as to say you cant click on it... i have an 09 with the new i drive.. is there anything i can do BESIDES for servicing it? i do have warranty and realize i can get this fixed for free at the dealer, but i just wanted to know if anyone encountered this issue, thanks.

Hard drive failure of some variety. One of the downsides of having an HDD based system.

In only 2 years? maybe road vibrations caused it

Design defect? Hardly. You have to realize what a HDD is: it's a bunch of metal discs spinning at about 5400rpm. With a metal reader rod less than 1/32" away. You hit a bump and that rod is going to damage the HDD

HDDs are notoriously bad. Someone should try to get an SSD workin for their nav. It'd be faster and more reliable

i realize what it is, but the car has seen no bumps. i know how i drive my car and how pampered it is. its not my first 335 with a hd based nav.

4400 rpm for our nav hd... and the particular drive that bmw uses is specifically designed to be used in cars for navigation purposes. Your drive was a defect, nothing else.

Its pretty problem prone but there is no reason it should fail if not subjected to hardcore driving or anything of that nature.

it pretty much fixed itself. i gave it time to cool down overnight and it is fine. Just last week the screen went completely red and then blank for a while until i let it rest for a couple of hours by turning off the car and letting it sleep.

Sounds like the HDD controller is/has failed.

Mine ('10 E90) failed a few months ago - same symptoms. You'll also find your Music Collection won't work along with your Phone book, as they're all HDD based. Got mine replaced under warranty, no issue at all.
