N55 and HPFP
I know this is a topic that's probably been beat to dead, but I'm considering buying a 2011 BMW 335i Xdrive (which is a lot of money for me) and I want to ensure I'm not getting into trouble buying a car with a notorious HPFP.
I was wondering if any "recently" made 2011 x35s are having this issue. I read some stuff regarding 2011 HPFP problems but those were from posts around sept-nov 2010. I heard that the N55 was supposed to fix the problem, but I also checked the BMW site and the recall on HPFPs that the N54 had doesn't apply to the N55. So if this car has problems, I'm gonna be on the hook for it. I've researched this topic a lot, but as I said, this is a lot of money for me, and I want to make sure I get a car that reflects that. I figured I should get an up to date answer before going through with anything. Thanks for you help! And feel free to hit me with these: |

its supposedly being fixed, but the real answer is that the engine is so new that it hasn't been tested enough by daily drivers to be sure. Even if it fails you are covered under the warranty anyway, no biggy.

My car has ~2500 miles... Got a slow crank, and a half engine a few days ago, but no issues since then.... I hope it was just a fluke, but still, not normal for a car this new.

Well since you asked for it:
But the truth is, the N55 still uses the exact same HPFP and there have been cases of it failing already. I have the car you want to get and knock on wood, no problems so far. You have to realize that if you do get the car it will come with a warranty so you will be covered. BMW still doesn't have an efficient HPFP replacement for the failed ones but im sure they will within the 3 years of your new car warranty IMO.. get the car and know that it will be resolved at some point within your warranty.

I work for BMW and @ my dealer we have seen zero HPFP failures. However I have heard of a very few N55 HPFP failures. The N55 is using the same pumps that are going into the Recalled N54s. There is nothing different. Now should this change your mind on purchasing the car? No, absolutely not. The chances of the pump failing on you are going to be very slim. BMW still doesnt know if the new pumps are "the fix" they are to new and not enough miles on them to find out. But you are buying a brand new car, you arent going to be on the "hook" for anything. You will have a warranty, you will have nothing to worry about. Its not like you are going to be @ the dealer once a week getting the HPFP replaced. Alot of people blew the HPFP issue out of proportion. BMW has gotten ahold of the issue and it has been getting better. I wouldnt worry about it.
Plus Id hate to break it to you, no matter what brand car you buy, something is likely going to fail and you will end up @ the dealership getting it fixed. |

There have been maybe 2 cases at most regarding hpfp, and even those could have been something else.
I have over 20k miles 15k of those being tuned. Zero issues. Buy the car, you'll be happy you did.

Get the 328 if reliability is important to you. You are sacrificing reliability for performance by going for the 335. The NA inline 6 is rock solid. The turbo, not so much.

I'm definitly going to wait a bit to see if anything other problems start to surface. I'm planning on buying a new car come May or June.
I've driven the 328i xdrive before which blows my nissan altima away (obviously). I just test drove the 335i though and all I can say is holy f***. |

Exactly.
I was going to see if they keep the same HPFP for 2012. Also, since I most likely will be get a used 2011 (let someone else take the 1st year depreciation hit) waiting till then kind of makes sense. Aren't the 2011 models cheaper once the 2012 ones comes out? |

uggh, had to try 4 times to get my car started this morning. had a few of these at random the last week but today was the worst. once she is warm, no problems, fires right up. but when it is cold out in the morning she is starting to fight me. 1500 on the odo. no limp mode or anything at all once on the road, just having a tough time starting. really hoping it is a fluke.

I dont know if this was your case, but I've been told to never fill up while you see a tanker filling the tanks because that stirs up the shit at the bottom of the tank and your pump could be sucking it up and putting it into your car... dunno how much weight that carries but i guess its feasible. |
