Finally. Headlight switch w/ rear fog light button!

Thanks to a good friend from Finland, I have now in my possession this:
http://twitpic.com/4edilf

Now time to see if it is in fact a true plug-and-play mod.

That should be a sweet retrofit. The rear taillamps already have the recesses for the fog lamp bulb(s)- no?

just received confirmation from my service advisor that the headlight switch can be coded to work! no additional parts needed - true plug and play. i am only being charged 1hr labor for removing the trim piece and coding the new switch.
finally, a working rear fog light in the 5GT.

Can you confirm there was actually coding done? Trip to the dealer for coding is not exactly pnp IMO...

Did this work after a trip to the dealer? Do you have the part number for the switch in the picture?

alextremo - 'coding' by the dealer meant a couple of clicks on their computer to have it work.

qmanisi - new switch works flawlessly. (the headlight aiming toggle is inop, as i don't have that feature). switch without that toggle is:

Yeah, thats the problem - "couple clicks on their computer" = trip to the dealer and $125 here...

Not the end of the world, but definitely not plug and play. On my last car I popped out the trim by hand, unclipped the old switch, clipped in the new and pushed the trim back on - thats it.

I wonder if this is something dvdinmotion can code with a custom cd?

So the bulbs are there already correct, Just the switch and coding are required for them to work

Kind of like the new 2011 Mini's

I also wonder if those lights illuminate as part of the panic braking system - anyone know?

Hi
I am trying to get similar thing done in Boston area so do you happen to have any details of 'what should they change in sw' to enable the rear foglight? I got the switch already and will get it installed tomorrow. Just worrying that the service here has no clue what to do =)
Thanks for the great news!

I can't answer your questions about coding, but I am local to you and would be willing to meet up to help install the switch. Who knows, maybe they were pulling his^ leg about coding and it will work with just hardware...

PM me if your'e interested.

You need the BMW service center to activate the button. I negotiated .5 hr of labor for them to install and code. Most of labor was for them removing/reinstalling trim piece to get to the new switch in.
If you install switch yourself, might be able to negotiate for lower labor rate...

I got the switch installed but the local BMW service center didnt know what/how to program the switch, thus my question of who did the programming for you so they could call'em or at least I could again make a case that it a) can be done and b) 'these guys did it'
seems BMW North America was not happy to help either or something crazy.

Service was performed at Patrick BMW in Schaumburg, IL
(847) 843-4000
Have them speak with the service manager. He is familiar with my request.

No Luck

No Luck. The BMW Gallery Norwood was not able to do it, even when they tried to open incident with BMW North America.
Does anyone know any good 'tuning shops' within Boston area that maybe could tune SW settings and line items?
I need both the Radio changed to ECE (even channels also) and Rear Foglight enabled.
This is veeeery frustrating =)

I had a friend pickup a switch for me on a recent trip abroad. I just swapped out the old one with the new switch which has the "Rear Fog" button and it worked without a trip to the dealer.

It was a <5 minute job and required no programming. This is on a May/2011 build 535i.

Are there ECE stations broadcast in the Boston Area that you will be able to pick up?

Wow, I need one of these switches for the new 5 series im purchasing, can you get in touch with your buddy in findland so i can obtain one? I believe these are just plug/play, and no additional coding is required.

It was PnP for me - pull off the trim by hand, unscrew and unplug the old switch, plug and screw in the new switch, push trim back in place.

Rear fogs, fog light dash indicator and all other switch functions work fine after this.
