MFest V Alternate (Snow) route
Please post here if you are potentially interested in an alternate, non-snow route.
Note this is just pre-planning, we can still choose to go the I-70 route if things look good on Weds. night. We also can choose an alternate meeting spot if the alternate route doesn't involve I-70 (e.g., no point in going up to Morrison exit if we're not going on I-70). I suggest we wait until Weds night to make the final call, based on the cams and forecast. 1. Gladius (Matt) 2. Ilis 3. Maruta 4. Baliano (Jason) 5. MalloyBMW

Cool, sounds good folks. I'm shooting for I-70 but if things end up being really bad then I will consider the alternate. However I likely won't come to that conclusion until Thursday morning.

1 - i25 to Springs, cut in through St George to 285, south to Del Norte, 160 through 4 Corners to end of 160, then south to Flagstaff, west on i40 to the road cutting up across the dam to Vegas.
2 - i25 to i40 to road cutting up across dam to Vegas. 1 is faster but involves Wolf Creek Pass, which has been widened much in recent years but is high and could have some snow pack. 2 is interstate almost the whole way. |

Wolf creek is 10x worse than I-70. Drove that pass alot and i would not reccomend if there is even a 2% chance of snow up there

Wolf Creek really depends. There is a bypass route there by cutting south through Antonito into New Mexico then can cut across through to Az that way. I can post these options when I'm back at my computer. Cotrip will be our best guide come driving time.

I-25 to Albuquerque to I-40: Google maps says 1017 miles/16 hours
I-25 to Walsenburg to Alamosa on Hwy 160, then through 4 Corners to Flagstaff/I-40: 943 miles/16 hours The first route keeps us on the interstates longer, probably higher sustained speeds. The second route goes through Wolf Creek pass, which is very dry right now. I'm more worried about traffic/slower speeds on this second route though, and having to pass through a lot of smaller towns. Doesn't seem like going 285 saves us anything - Google says it's actually longer that way. That said, I haven't driven this way in a long time, so would like to hear from anyone who has more recently. If we go one of these routes, where shall we meet? I'm up in Erie and am picking up my passenger in Westminster so anywhere from there south will work for me.

I used to have a sales territory from Colorado Springs to Raton NM. That is a super easy low traffic/low patrol drive. Raton Pass is dry with temps in the 70-80's. I also had Walsenburg/ Alamosa in my territory and you have lots of two lane roads with lower speeds. Either drive will be okay, option #1 could end up being a bit faster b/c of higher speed limits. 6 one way, half a dozen the other.....I vote option 1. As far as a meeting place goes, I live in Colorado Springs so I could just join the caravan at the North end of C/S or if you want to meet in C/S there are several Shell stations right off 1-25. The Woodman Exit (4th exit once you enter C/S) has a shell station right off the exit, we could meet there....

Maybe departing later Thursday morning can work for the I70 route. Some thoughts on the other thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...&postcount=751

I hope you guys have a great time. Drive safely.
I was around Raton Pass a couple of years ago. I was coming back from LV. It was May. I had to wait a day because of the snow.
