(help) Could it be the intake or exhaust? Air leak sound, driverside when acceleratin
Long story short, just had the steering column replaced by a shop (no warranty)
And now I hear this sound from the driver-side when I hit the gas pedal/when accelerating. (my steering wheel buttons no longer work also, but that’s another story) It sounds like air is leaking from somewhere or air sucking in. It is not the tires, I can not hear it if I roll down the window, maybe the wind noise is too loud. I had my wife accelerate at idle with the hood up and I could not replicate the sound. The best way I can describe the sound is like when release air from a tire when accelerating. It sounds like a 4 banger compressor engine on my last car..…lol maybe the shop hooked me up with a turbo! Any idea?????? Could this be the intake or the exhaust? I have the OEM performance intake and the performance exhaust. Maybe there’s air leak somewhere? Or is this the sound of the perf. intake (air from the top of the intake box inlet near the coil covers)???

Hah sorry, that's a tough problem! My guess would be the intake since you can't hear the problem from outside, but I have no experience with the performance intake. I know on that intake there's an inlet right by the drivers side A pillar. Maybe check the connections. There could be some obstruction in it causing the whistling. Wish I could help you, someone's gotta have some credible advice for ya.

I would be suspect of your (no warranty) steering column replacement. I don't care what deal you got, anytime you deal 3rd party outside of a BMW service center or a REPUTABLE performance shop that specializes in European vehicles you are leaving yourself vulnerable for shit bags to shaft you without lube and without a reach around.
An exhaust leak is very distinct and sounds much like a whistle. It sounds god awful and you can hear it inside and outside of the car even at a dead stop. Intake is definitely not the cause of this either because you would notice a considerable horsepower loss if there was a leak.

An exhaust leak has a god awful whistling sound and can be heard no matter where you are when you rev the engine. Unless it sounds like that, there's no way it's your exhaust.
