2005 118d Sport Manual Rear Differential
Hi guys,
Complete noob here and could really use some advice. I need a new rear differential for my 118d sport and my main dealer have quoted me £1200 which is more than I want to spend. I've seen a couple of used on eBay for £350 ish which is more sensible but can't find any information about which will or won't fit my car. I've read in some places that a diff from any manual 1 series will fit, regardless of ratio. But I've also read conflicting information saying that any post 2007 diff will not fit a pre-2007 car. I'm trying to find one with the least amount of miles which invariably means it's coming from a newer car. But I don't want to buy it only to find that it doesn't fit! Any advice about what I need to look for would be greatly appreciated! Cheers, Lee |

Maybe try looking up various diffs on RealOEM. ?
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/ Then you will see what will fit for each model year. Dackel |

Thanks for the tip mate. Have taken a look through and it seems the diff was changed in Feb 2007. So I guess I'll need to find one from pre Feb 2007 after all.
Thanks again for your help, it's appreciated. Cheers, Lee |

Mine's making a quite high pitch whining noise as the speed increases.
I don't have much of a clue so asked a mechanic to take a look. He put it on a rack to listen underneath while accelerating and he said it's the diff making the noise and he thinks it's on the way out. |

BMW diffs will make that high pitch noise(only under part throttle cruising but goes away under power). It is from the customer not following BMW breakin guidelines. ie: not to exceed 170 kph(or WOT full load accel runs) for the first 1,200 miles. I have rented many (new) BMW's that have had that noise. It is no wonder on a rental. I think I would first try replacing your diff oil. Then see how it sounds. Also take a look at the old fluid's condition and smell. Look for bits of metal and use a magnet to pick out any metal bits. Dackel |

Also, it may just need a rebuild which may be cheaper.
I had mine done on my old 120i as it was broken in 3 places; the car had only done 9000 km! Turns out the car was used in the BMW Celebrity Race during the F! Grand Prix and BMW and the next dealer concealed the fact. I had it fixed and sold it.
