Burning Oil!!!!????

Hey everyone!! I have a problem that I have heard one or two other members discuss but I wanted to see how many of you have actually experienced what I just did tonight.

I was on the way to dinner when I notice a warning traingle with the exclamation point in it. I went through and did a systems check and I discovered that the oil level was at minimum and above that it said "+1 qt". I assume this means I need to add one quart (since this cars have no dipstick I can only rely on what the car tells me). I ran her hard a few times when I first got her but wasn't too crazy over the winter because I had the winter wheels and tires on her. However, rescently the weather has gotten warmer and I got my summer tires/wheels back on, so I have been having fun with her the last few days, but nothing too crazy. I have 8K mile on my baby and this is the first time I have gotten this warning indicator. I also notice a "burning" smell last night (that I never smelled before) that engines get when they are brand new and you run them hard----but my enginge is already broken in (I've ran her hard plenty of times before)

My big question is: How many of you are having to add oil? How much are you buring? How quickly are you burning it? Should I be concerned or is it just like those E46 M3---a high performing inline 6 that loves oil as much as gas? Any guesses on the burning smell?

Thanks in advance for anyone who can chime in!!!

~Mark

I added a quart at 8000 miles or so due to the light coming on and letting me know. It's now passed 16,500 and no light to alert me to it being low again. Perhaps I will check it tomorrow if I remember and let the forum know if I need another quart. I checked a couple of weeks ago and it was still at full.

People that didnt change their oil after break in seem to see more oil consumption... I did an after break-in oil change, and my car has always shown "MAX"... this seems to be the trend, since I have seen others complaining about consumption, and none of them had changed the oil since purchase.

Thanx!! I didn't change my oil after the break in, so maybe that is it. I trust BMW to change my oil when it is needed......actually, all my other cars I used to change my own oil, but this car is too low to the ground so if I pull it up on my ramps, the front air dam will get messed up, so I am kind of forced to get everything done at the dealership. I am having them change the oil this week, even if I have to pay for it.

I got my after break-in oil change for free, but to do that, you have to work it into the sale upfront... If the sales guy thinks that something as little as an extra oil change is important, he has no problem throwing that in, since it doesnt cost him anything...

Don't the BMW M series car get free oil change after break-in period?

I didn't change my oil after break in. At 8000 miles today the yellow triangle appeared to let me know I needed another quart. And I also broke her in according to the owners manual.

7700 miles. By the book break in. No post break in oil change. Checked it last week and still reads MAX.

Maybe I'm just lucky.

Maybe you need to just start finding the upper power band past 3500 rpm

Although BMW oil is Castrol, it is not the formula used in NA, it is European Castrol. Off the shelf Castrol does not meet the appropriate "LL" standard.

Yeah. Or do a search for other off shelf products that would be compatible.

The price for a bottle is not bad tho...so you can probably just get one from the dealer. I got one for free when I bought the car...

I did a... um... hard break in with no oil change after. I have now consumed 2 quarts of oil in 7,000 miles. The car is in for service right now to make sure the oil level sensor isn't malfunctioning...

My SA told me that BMW considers anything better than 1qt per 900 miles to be within acceptable range. I guess they really don't try to make their cars oil efficient, huh?

I just checked mine and it's low to... The car has just over 6,000 miles and wasn't low a month ago as I check it monthly.. Maybe it's the warmer weather? I think I'm just going to call the dealer and have the oil changed... Even if I got to pay..
