The upcoming BMW 6-Series Coupe will come in a 640i flavor, featuring the turbocharged inline-6 series dubbed the N55. This configuration has so far not made it to the US on the Cabrio version, but Autoblog.com has confirmed that the 640i will make it here in both Coupe and Cabrio versions when the coupe arrives this fall.

The N55 is a TwinPower turbo 3.0L inline-6 pumping out 316HP and 332ft-lb of torque in European spec.

In addition to the N55, Autoblog has also learnt that the AWD xDrive system will also become a new option, but only on the V8 650i.

even though it is a 6, the car can pack some power. I drove a 535, and that car rocks.

Why the hell would they call it 640i? At least stay consistent and badge it 635i

~$80k coupe, fuel economy yay, extra ~5mpg going to save $6 each week yay! I just cant get excited about this.

Make it 550hp 24+mpg, thats exciting news.

They are being consistent.

*35i: = 300hp I6 (see 535i, 335i, etc.)
*40i: > 300hp I6 (see 740i, 640i)

Are you sure about that logic... I mean what yor stating regarding the badge convention and Horsepower is accurate...although I think it's truly based on the model code of the engine.

740 = N54 twin turbo
535/335/135 = N55 Single turbo
335is/1///M = N54 Twin turbo
I am thinking the 640 should be the N54 engine like in the 740.

Let me know if you think Nam wrong...

Thanks!

BMW no longer is using the engine displacement or much less the engine code as the last two numbers in the model designation.

The 40i designation is based on power output, not by engine code. Remember, the *35i used to be a N54 and now it is an N55, however the power output remained the same and thus it kept the 35i designation.

Yes, and I'll second what Technic said above.

N54 engine is going buh-bye. 640i is definitely getting the N55. In fact, it already has it:

http://www.bimmerfile.com/2010/11/19...ormance-boost/

I'll also add this: watch as the engines change for the F0x 7 series LCI next year. Are you willing to bet that the 740i/Li will either retain the N54 @ 320hp+, or revert to the N55 @ 300hp? If so, I'll definitely take that bet against you. Let me know and we can decide what's at stake here.
