Just got 'the call'
Almost sounds friendly and innocent enough to make me believe they won't hurt my car.. Please vote: a Just do it, you're a fool b Up to you man c No way, I agree with you, they are butchers My DIY capabilities are racheting up, my gear is arriving in the mail, and i am approaching critical (internet) knowledge mass to attempt an oil change. What to do? |

Isn't it only 1-year maintenance, 2-year warranty

I took my car in for that transmission fault. No harm done. Don't worry. Quote:
You are gaining fast bro. Yup. what I want to do after 2 year is take it outside to fix major and even minor things. May bring back to dealer for oil change just to keep the service record. Hehe. This is what many ppl do and say their cars are serviced by the dealer.

Recalled the old good days some 20 years ago, I did all maintenance myself for W202 c-class for more than 6 years. Everything is jsut mechenics. For my second Mercedes, which's W211, I never ever open the hood in 3years. From the E36, BMW already computerised the engine and you couldn't do anything without OBD or something like that. Oh forget to tell you, and makes you feel better, I am a machinist in certain field.

Why would you change the oil this soon when not BMW recommended? --- sounds like a total waste of money to me. Surely BMW knows what they're talking about or all their engines would prematurely wear out. I don't think they'd put their reputation on the line. With 4 years, 50k miles free service here, it's a no-brainer!!!

But now the standard warranty on cars here are only 1yr regular maintenance, and 2yrs parts only. Now BMW only recommend changing oil/regular maintenance at 12000KM/12-months. Doesn't quite inspire confidence for a 2yr parts warranty for us, right?

We get 1 free service for BMW, 2yrs warranty which is for something breaking. Just read in the newspaper some people are indeed experiencing getting 'butchered' -made to pay alot when they only expecting a few K for an oil change. But this was not what i was afraid of -i don't want them to be like a butcher to a pig -slaughter it and make faults when none exists before! My dad's car just came back from our indy mechanic, and they forgot to close the hood and the side indicator was hanging by the wire
On my old car, they forgot to reattach the engine shield, at the time i have no idea about these things, but it was obvious by looking, so i just got a piece of wire and sewed it back on. |

Early oil change is up to you ..
but i read its more important the number of cold-to-warm heat /starting cycles than mileage - especially for city drivers like most of us. I have 4km in 11months.. but drive nearly everyday.. so althought i am way below the distance marker, in terms of starts i have 300 already .. I guess in the days of 'dipsticks' you could look at the oil and see the color .. Jacky, i think a lot of the engine electronics OBD etc. is BS, you can learn most of it from the internet (but it takes a lot of time).. its not as complicated and overreaching as they suggest. For example, unless something breaks, for oil, air filter, breaks, transmission oil can all be done yourself and reset without the need for bmw computers.. youtube has videos showing how you can reset all the service trackers/indicators by pressing the little nob below the tacho. |

11months.. they call so early .. i will buy the components i need from them, let them make their 20% margin on oil and filters! haha .. My plan if i can do it sucessfully is do everything myself .. if it breaks while still warranty, BMW, if after, find the indy shop with computer that you mentioned. |

Grimmy, you are very enthusiastic and have a lot of time to do all these services yourself. I don't even have to time to wash the car myself, not even take it to car wash shop.

You can merely use a screwdriver to calibrate, for example, the oil-air ratio! Or wouldn't F10/all BMWs no longer have to calibrate anything, such as Valve-timing/angle, or sparkling-timing? Were those just life long use needless to re-set? By stupid enough we have to send our car to garage or dealer, where there all the fools use OBD or sometime just to show off!!!

I mean, computer people are scared of mechanics, and vice versa .. but it may not be as hard as imagined .. according to google and youtube, you can service the car for many years unless something is broken, which requires the diagnostic equipment, otherwise its replace and reset (i think..) |

What I want to say is before you saying someone/something that is BS, learn more first. Especially when you know how to find do DIY thr google, you can google everything. And you will find that "anyone who use bare hands can service the car for many years unless something is broken" is really BS We are talking recently cars, not the grandpa's age.
