Harsh Ride on e92 335
I have an e9 335 Aussie version which has sports seats, sports suspension. The ride is too firm on many of our roads which have undulating bitumen.(Wife gets carsick so it is a must fix situation). Previous e39 540 with m suspension was not a problem for her and she has had many wild rides and does not normally experience motion sickness.
The 335 seems too firm to the point of being a kidney shaker. I don"t track the car so going softer would not be a problem. I am thinking of leaving the stock springs and installing adjustable shocks so that firm is about stock and have the ability to soften the shocks for a smoother ride. Any advice if this will work and if so what shocks? The car has stock 18" offset wheel package with runflat tyres so going non runflat may also help a bit. Thanks for any help. |

shouldn't have went with the sports package, you could go for smaller rims and larger walled tires, change out the suspension - raise the car. airbags haha

Since its stock height, you can try Koni FSD, they are supposed to work out the bumps but still handle well. Just dont try them on a lowered car unless you get the Eibach Pro Kit combo.

Going with non run flat tire will help a lot especial over rough transition. The softer side wall is just more compliant of rough surfaces so it will take out the enough harshness so you will not cringe before hitting a rough section.
The Koni FSD will be the best shock for you and give the best of both worlds. The combination of the above should make a major difference in ride quality with no loss in performance. Search the forum for people who are using non run flat tires and Koni FSD so you can draw your own conclusion. There are few people with both non RFT and Koni FSD who posted comments. Orb |

Are Koni yellow available for e92 335?
Will they work OK with stock sport springs? Anybody know the part numbers and where to get them? Do e90/e92 and e93 use the same shocks? (dimensions/mounting) |

That's just crazy, i thought my E92 was toooo smooth, like an old lady's car...the suspension have no feedback and bodyroll is just terrible...i want it to be a little stiffer...
but if you think OEM suspension is too harsh, there's not much u can do about it...seems like ur a Lexus kinda guy if u want smooth ride

My past experiences with Koni yellows is that they are stiffer than stock, even on the softest settings. The FSDs or a Bilstein shock (if available) are probably a better option for you.

Go with 17" or 18" non-run flat tires. That will help out quite bit. Fiddle with tire pressures as well...
If that doesn't help...then sounds likes you need a Lexus (but not the IS tho...because that rides stiffer than the BMW). |

True, tire pressure is very important. When I was on RFTs, I had the pressure down to 31 PSI and the ride was pretty decent. I also have H&R sway bars so that helped to eliminate body roll and allowed me run such a low pressure.

Check tire pressure first. If that doesn't help...then look at swapping your run flat tires to non-runflats. You will probably have more luck doing that than switching suspension. If none of that helps...but maybe look into test driving a replacement car? Or get some Gravol for your wife. |

I have stock non-sport on my 328 e90 - I'd like to go to a sport type suspension for drop and a bit tighter handling....want to trade? Seriously. PM me if interested.

Does the sport package have different suspension than the ones without? I thought all E92 comes with the same suspension... Sport package just raises the speed limit and have the bucket seats?

i really wanted konis as i loved the ride on my e34 540 the biggest reason for the hardh ride is the tires the run flat tire walls are super stiff so that when you have a flat they don't just collapse...best fix is to get some new non runflat tires...if you have the dough get some Michelin ps2...don't know how harsh of a ride they are but they are the best for everything else!!! ________ Ford proving grounds picture Last edited by purplewidow; 03-29-2011 at 08:00 PM.. |

When did you get the car? The suspension takes a while to settle in. When I first got it, it was far too stiff for my liking, almost jarring. After 1500 miles, it's bordering on the soft side. If you haven't had it for that long, let it settle a bit.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. We both love the car, only problem is with jarring on sudden dips. I am a retired short track speedway driver, (20 years of it) so I still feel the need for speed. Love BMW this is number 5. SUV and Lexus is out of the question. I went part way to solving "her" problem by putting a 2" high density foam cushion on the seat as a trial. Change something in the equation to vary harmonics. Add some more suspension to the the cargo.
I also have always believed tire sidewall flex plays a big part in ride/performance/comfort and have been a bit dubious about runflats which seem to be like steel walls with a rubber tread. I recognise the safety benefits of RFT, but I have had one puncture in 20 years/315,000 miles, so it does not look like a big risk. Looks like next step is to dump the runflats. Myabe reconsider when RFT get a bit more developed and refined. |
