2012 model 320i what engine?

Hello,

From the Caribbean. The BMW 320i is sold here as a base model. Due to our import and other duties we pay about 2X the MSRP for the same car in the US.
So if a vehicle costs 34,000 US, we would pay about 60,000+ for the same car.
This duty is based on the engine size above a 1.6 engine. However the duty on a 2.0 engine is still manageable (relatively).

Once you cross a 2.0l engine, the duty starts to increase dramatically.

So I'm curious whether the 320i will also carry the new 4 cylinder turbo engines?

RE: 2012 model 320i what engine?

Hello from Singapore

I wonder what will be the "2.0" engine offered in Singapore. I was stunned when coming to my knowledge that the current E9X series 320i engine offered here doesn't have direct injection, getting 156 hp rather than 170 hp in Europe. If that is also the case also with the upcoming F3X series 320i in Asia, that they will get an in every way worse engine (fuel consumption, less kW output and torque) that will definitely be a show-stopper for me to cough up 200k+ Sing-dollars to get one.

Anyone knows?

Cheers, Dan

At launch, only the 328i, 335i and 320d engines will be available.

From the initial press package:
Quote:
In spring 2012, BMW will launch three further engines for the new sports sedan series, all of them offering plentiful power and outstanding efficiency. Following the impressive BMW 328i, the top four-cylinder model already being presented today, the upcoming new BMW 320i will be the second model to be powered by a member of the new-generation 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine family. In the new BMW 320i, this TwinPower Turbo engine will develop maximum power of 135 kW/184 hp at 5,000 rpm and peak torque of 270 Nm at just 1,250 rpm. The two upcoming turbodiesel models, which will be based on the same 2.0-litre core engine that is used in the new BMW 320d, will also develop impressive power and torque. In the BMW 318d, the diesel powerplant will develop maximum power of 105 kW/143 hp at 4,000 rpm and powerful peak torque of 320 Nm, which is available between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm. The extremely fuel-efficient BMW 316d, meanwhile, develops maximum power of 85 kW/116 hp at 4,000 rpm and maximum torque of 260 Nm, again at between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm. Further engine versions will follow, including a six-cylinder diesel unit and numerous xDrive models.

In countries offered the 320i will be available as of March 2012 production. It's the 2.0l Twinpower turbo inline 4 with 184hp.

Best regards,
south

See Euro BMW sites. This is a detuned N20 likely to be offered in Canada, replacing the 323i. 0-100km/h automatic in 7.6s is just ok.

Yeah, but I'll bet S$120K of the price is your country's very large tax on cars, specifically COE.

What are the hardware differences between the 320 and 328 engine? Or is it just software?

Any knowledge or ideas about this?

I know that 3.28i has N20 engine. I am not sure if 3.20i is the same.

I believe it's just purely software. If there are any physical changes, it may be running a lower pressure than the 28i but otherwise I believe they are the same.

Depending on batch, there are various differences from only the software to different turbo or different block.

Does this mean that by changing engine related parameters on a 3.20i, can you convert the car to a 3.28i? In other words, can it be possible to copy engine parameters of a 3.28i to a 3.20i?

It depends on ur batch, if u have one that have different turbo or other components then it's not as simple as that.

Yeah, for some reason, it's not as simple as that otherwise it would be common knowledge and they would never sell anything north of a 320! But have no other evidence or knowledge to say that mechanical stuff is changed...

Both E90Fleet & I spotted different part numbers for various components, depending on production date.

You're prescient!! At Christmas when you posted, COE was S$72k, but it went up to S$92k early this month. Looks like it's heading towards the S$120k mark of your prediction - this is also in the range of local motoring analysts'/industry watchers' predictions (S$100-$140k during 2H 2012).

It's so crazy, we in Singapore pay more for a piece of paper entitling us to buy a car, than you in the US do for the actual car itself!

The F30 320i features the 2.0 twinpower N20 engine, same as the one found in de 328i.

When I lived in S'pore in 1997-98 on expat assignment, I rented a 1985 Honda Accord for S$1500 a month. COE and the other taxes are very, VERY high. But they do keep your small country from becoming like Bangkok or Manilla: covered in an endless traffic jam.

I can't tell you how much I miss S'pore food, Sim Lim Square and Mustafa's on Sunday afternoon (when all the guest workers made the place fun -- and a little bit scary).

I know, I used to miss local hawker fare like crazy in the 5+ years that I lived in England. But all is not lost! Have you tried packaged sauces from a company called Prima Taste? You need to provide raw ingredients like noodles or meats, but the sauces have very easy-to-follow instructions and taste truly authentic. My personal favorites are Laksa and Mee Siam, and the Char Kway Teow, Hainanese Chicken Rice and Prawn Mee are popular too. I have a German colleague who used to live in Singapore and now visits once or twice a year. He buys a whole suitcase of these sauces back each time he visits because his whole family (wife & kids) miss Singapore food so much.

Mustafa on a Sunday afternoon...you must be pretty adventurous to enjoy that atmosphere!!

Yes, that's right - from Performance Motors Limited, the authorized dealer. Still waiting for news...delivery might now be a bit earlier, at the end of June rather than in July. I can't wait!
