Continental ExtremeContact DWS??
I ordered rims last week, and am starting to look for tires. I live in Houston so I am not worried about winter. It would be nice to have a high performance summer tire, but I also want the best treadwear possible. I don't want to get crappy tires, but I also spent way more than I wanted to on rims so I need to be a little conservative.
The Continental ExtremeContact DWS has a 540 treadwear rating in the Ultra High Performance All Season version, and only a 340 in the Max Performance Summer version. Does anyone have any opinions on the longer tread life vs. a better performing summer tire? Any other good options for higher performance tires with good treadwear ratings? Ultra High Performance All Season Max Performance Summer Thanks for any advice! Last edited by crazyfoo; 08-19-2011 at 02:38 PM.. Reason: spelling! |

I just put a set on today and they definitely don't have the traction as the summer RFTs that were on it. Then again they are new and probably need a bit of wear in.

Fantastic tire. I have them on my Audi A6 4.2 - beats the crap out of the ContiProContact on it originally. They're fantastic in the rain; they simply shred through puddles and very hydro resistant!

I had DWS (235/40-18) on my previous 08 Passat 3.6. Treadwear is very good but you do sacrifice a little on the performance. I drive 30k annually so I needed a compromise and these fit the bill; I would prefer not to have buy new tires each year. Snow performance is pretty good, short of a dedicated winter setup. I am going with either the DWS or Yokohama ENVigor for my new rims. DWS has a 50k warranty and the Yoko a 45k warranty, though they have a 560 treadwear rating. Pricing is very similar.

@vagruppe - looks like Yoko does not have the sizes I will need (235/35/19 & 265/30/19).
Glad to hear that people have had good experiences with the DWS, that is the direction I am currently leaning. I think I can deal with a little less traction to have the extra wear, I don't usually drive like a maniac so I should do alright! Thanks for the replies |

I am running the DWS, very nice tire. I've put about 6k mi on them. Grippy for an all season, quiet and good road manners.
If I recall correctly there was a recent test of the DW and DWS and the editors stated there was not a tremendous improvement when running the DW by comparison with the DWS. |

I have them on my Vette and loved them. They're going on my VS8.2s I'm ordering this week too. The sidewalls are soft in comparison to others and you'll notice it in hard cornering, but the traction, noise and wet capability were outstanding. FWIW, I actually drove on them in a decent amount of snow in my Vette and they performed perfectly.

I just had the DWS installed about 3 weeks ago and they ride amazing: quiet, smooth, sticky. Unfortunately, the sidewalls are very soft and I noticed a week ago a slow leak in a rear tire and found this weekend a small hole in the sidewall. Less than 400 miles in and I have a worthless tire; be warned...what our RFTs could handle is much less than what the DWS can. Considering the pothole that probably caused the leak, I'm truly disappointed in the quality of these tires.

After about 11,000 miles, I find the DWS' soft sidewalls don't seem to negatively affect cornering traction, although they do create a somewhat "mushy" feel on initial turn in. If this is a problem, increasing the pressures by a few psi helps considerably.

Been using the DWS for about 25,000km (16,000 miles) and they are great. E92 is known for wearing the inner edge of the tires due to the camber, but so far there's still lots of tread left. These are miracle tires: great traction in dry, rain, and snow - great grip - no compromise. Will get another set to replace these a few years down the road.
My only gripe with these tires is the lack of 255/30/19 option. |

great tire! 12k on mine, fronts look new rears have about 50% left. I have never gotten more than 7-10k out of summer tires in the rear. These have become my tire of choice.

I have the DWS for 1 week now and all i can say is that they ride smooth and quiet. The only downside is they are really soft in corner and at high speed even tough i went from the original 16'' runflat to 18''. The runflat were firmer. Be sure to order them in 235s width for an 8'' rim because they are narrow.

Also, add more psi, because they have a higher load rating. That will alleviate the soft feel everyone seems to experience. I have them at 35psi front/41psi rear.
