SOS Button

So who's pressed their SOS button on the headliner? Bought my car in the UK and as I live in The ROI didn't think it would work...however IT DOES. I pressed the button today to discover after about 5 secs I was asked did I want police, fire or ambulance...I said I was testing the button and ended the call. So how did the car make the call when my phone was in the house where bluetooth cant be picked up?

is much like when you have no sim in a mobile phone, you can still phone emergency numbers in any country.

the car has a phone/sim whatever built in, you can't make calls on it (directly) but it's how they send things to the car via BMW assist, or google maps etc and also how this malarky works

I'm guessing it was the real 999/112 call centre it sounded too official for BMW and there was no..."ah mmmm eh ah mmmm....sorry computer says no"

Has anyone pressed it 'for real' so as to speak? I understand it pinpoints exactly where you are. I understand it also activates if the airbag goes off and automatically calls the emergency services.

You think the car automatically phoning emergency services and reporting your location if you have an accident severe enough to trigger the airbags is 'dumbing down'? Sounds like a pretty good safety feature to me...

Well I aint rich and I aint dumb but I sure am glad my car has that function for when my Mrs is driving it alone.

I say, well done BMW. Another example of one of many reasons I part with my hard earned cash to own one.

Defo. Imagine you were on your own down a country lane and you stacked it... You could be unconscious but the ambulance would still come. That's an awesome feature.

I was told by BMW that the SOS button goes to their call centre ... they then pass on the info. If your airbags go off BMW 'call' your car and if no reply they call the emergency services and pass on your location.

I saw a news article a while back where the unit in one BMW was faulty and the BMW call centre thought the car had been involved in an accident so told the police who ended up looking for the car when it was fine ...

It's like in Die Hard 4.0 where they deliberately set the airbag off and speak to BMW Assist.
