Michelin Pilot Super Sport- overkill for 328?
Hey guys,
So I was thinking of getting Michelin pilot SS on my e90 328i. It's my DD. I don't track it, but I do occasionally take it on a canyon run once every week or 2 weeks. So is getting these set of tires overkill? When I called Big O Tires and asked them for a quote, they seemed very surprised when I said I wanted them for a BMW 328i.... They initially asked if I had a Porsche. lol. I currently have Bridgestone Potenza RE050A pole position. The rear tire got a nail in the sidewall, so the other option is to just replace the rears. I like these tires, but I was thinking of trying the pilot ss since there's soo much hype about it. So what do you guys recommend? thanks, anthony |

I have super sports on my car and other than on the track, they sometimes do seem like its overkill. IMO you should just save the money and go with PS2s, theyre still great tires and seem to work for what you need

Not overkill at all. I would say R comps are overkill but PSS are a great tire for the street. IMO the tire is considered the #1 mod for any car, cheap tires makes your car feel...well cheap. You will be more than happy with them and yes, they are cheaper than PS2's. Tire Rack is running a $75 coupon until the 7th.

if you like driving your car fast through nice bendy roads, i wouldn't say its over kill. i always get good tires and have never regretted it.
if it was for your wives car then maybe it would be overkill

i just picked up the goodyears that are on sale right now. i was also going to get the PSS for my 328 but the way i looked at it was if i had a M3 i would be getting forged wheels and the PSS tires but since i dont...i dont need to go that crazy right now.
the good years are great tires at a great price right now

I have the super sports on my 328 and I personally don't feel they're overkill. The grip on these bad boys are insane, def worth the $$ imo. get em especially since you do canyon runs every so often bc these tires make mine more enjoyable.

I run Michelin PS2 A/S+ on my 335i, and I think they handle every bit as good as PS2 summer tires used to handle on my E36 M3. If you don't track your car, they might be a good choice for you. A big plus is they should last about twice as long as either the PS2 summer tires or the Super Sports. I figure to get 40K at least on mine, which is double the best I ever did with summer tires, or the stock runflats that came with the car.
Another advantage is you don't have to turn back at the slightest indication of winter weather, unlike if you run summer tires. Those are like roller skates on any kind of snow or ice. Ever want to drive over the Grapevine during snow season? You won't regret dumping the Bridgestone Bricks, no matter what you do. |

PSS is a street tire. is it overkill? I dont think so.
Overkill is when you run R-compound on the street, & run slick for the HPDE. except if you track a lot, & get very very lazy to change out wheels every track event, then you could run Toyo RA-1 (r-compound but street legal) on the street.

The great thing about the PSS nobody has mentioned is the comfort. These tires are so quiete and smooth, even on a 19" setup.
I went from Hankook Evos to the PSS- just night and day in every way - but the comfort aspect just fantastic. They are so much quieter, I hear the exhaust on my car now even more clearly- its not being drowned out by tire noice. The grip, turn in and feel is outstanding. Spend the extrea bucks on these tires, it's not that much more money for what you get. And there is a $70 refund right now.

Doesn't sound like overkill since you do some spirited driving.

Agreed.
If you can push your car hard enough for your tires to lose grip (ie in a corner or off ramp) then one really can't tell you that a better performance tire like the PSS is overkill. Tires http://www.tirerack.com/a.jsp?a=AH8&...ires/index.jsp
