Snow tire sizing

I have a 328i E90 w/ sport package and I currenty have

17" x 8.0" front, 17" x 8.5" rear with 225/45R17 F, P255/40R17 R tires.

I have come to the conclusion that I need to get snow tires. I have a friend selling some 15" wheels with snows on them ready to fit my car... however my questions are:

How do you properly size a tire for winter? Do you undersize it and go narrower? recomend taller sidewall? or are low pro's no different than tall sidewall tires?

the snows I can get off my buddy are:

205/60/15 bridgestone blizzak tires

would these work on my car or is 15" too small and tires too narrow?

The smallest tire listed for your car is 205/55R16, so forget the 15" wheels - they are too small (probably won't clear the brakes).

Why not check Tirerack.com for a wheel/winter tire package?

15" wheels will not fit over your brakes, sorry.

Ah ok figured.

Only reason was because my buddy is selling a set of 15" wheels/winter tire setup he had on his much much older 3-series.

Oh well.

How do I want to size my winter tires? Id either buy a old set of 16" rims to put them on OR perhaps just take my RFT off my stock 17s and throw them on.

Undersize the tires? same size?

I live in central PA, and yes we get snow/ice throughout winter, but there will be MANY days where it is dry out and just cold. I don't need "extreme" snow tires, just something decent that won't wear really bad on dry surfaces.

Either will work fine, but for better loose/deep snow traction you could minus size to 205/55R16. Whichever wheels you choose, make sure they clear the brakes on the car. We have a list of new wheels that do in our winter search area here : http://www.tirerack.com/a.jsp?a=AH8&...nter/index.jsp

If you're buying used wheels, make sure they came off of an E90-E93 328/330/335.

Same size.
205/55/16 on 16" and 225/45/17 on 17".
