So I've been waiting 5 weeks for my rims, and will still be waiting until next month... difficult to wait so long!!

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone actually uses a torque wrench when putting on their rims. I've had rims on my previous 4 cars, and always just changed them myself without a torque wrench. What does everyone else do? Any problems if they are too tight? Obviously there would be problems if they are not tight enough.

i always use a torque wrench.

Yes always use a torque wrench, if you overtighten them you can put added stress on the brake rotors and then can warp or break (depending on how strong you are).

torque wrench FTW, its 110nm by the way, don't overtighten those bolts

back in college i had a 94 integra that the lugs were torqued on wayyyyy too tight and i snapped one of the bolts off the hub when trying to take them off. after that, i always use a torque wrench. lol

If you do use a toque wrench don't use it to open your nuts.

It's 88 ft-lbs or about 120 nm

It's 88 ft lbs and 120 Nm.

I always use a breaker bar to break the lugs loose and a torque wrench to tighten the lugs to 88 lb ft, using a star pattern to both loosen and tighten the lugs.

I don`t use the torque wrench, I just hand tighten the nuts with a `+` shaped lug nut bar. No reefing on it or leaning on it, just the torque with my arms while parallel to the road.

On a side note, I remember seeing one local tire shop that would tighten the lug nuts with an air compressor then check them with a torque wrench.

That is an incorrect way of using a torque wrench.... just an FYI. The lug nuts/bolts will likely be over-torqued.

Best way is just to tighten them snug with a regular wrench then use a torque wrench to finish.

I have two jack stands and a jack, though I generally just do one wheel at a time, and only put the jack stand under the car as a backup for the jack (though I do lower the car a lil to rest on the stand).

Its good practice and encouraged but once you get the feel down its not life or death using it.

Good thread, I'll be swapping out rims myself. Guess its time to buy a torque wrench and jack stands.

I never use tq wrench....no problems here....i kinda know what 90lbs feels like (used tq wrench one time), now i just use hands...only need a bit of force to make them tight.
