Stock 17" wheels on 330i
Just noticed that the stock wheels (159) are 8" wide front and rear. You'd think they would put some wider rims/tires on the 330i, with the extra HP and all. This is a bit of a disappointment since I really like the style of the "159" rims.
I am not so hot on the idea of running 18" rims from the Sports Package either. The rims are likely heavier and the weight is distributed further out from the hub/axle. Add to that the higher cost of replacement tires. Just looked over at TireRack.com and the difference for a set of four is $400-500US. Not a huge amount of money but not chump change either, considering it is for something that I would consider "fashion-before-function". Would be interesting to see a comparison test of the 330i with the stock rims and the SP rims for skid pad/slalom. Another 24 hours and I get a chance to see this E90 in person, whee... |

True anytime you put larger wheels you're adding rolling diameter and likely more weight, but the 330 should have plenty of power to drive the 162 SP wheels no problem, plus they just look so damn good!

That's funny because when you opt for the 325 SP and get 17"s, the rear ones are wider than the front (8.5 rear, 8.0 front). Think of it this way though, while everyone with SP rims are burning through their tires in less than 20000 miles, you'll be able to hold on to yours for far longer. That is, taking into account the fact that you will be able to rotate your tires and that the nonSP tires in general will wear more slowly.

Don't consider it fashion b4 function until you drive it. If the SP still feels like fashion then save your money.

For my purposes, I'd prefer the Sport Package (for the seats, suspension and steering wheel) completly intact except for the wheels and tires. I think that I'd be much happier with a set of 17 x 8 wheels with some nice sticky 235/45 R-17 rubber wrapped around them. That would give me a little extra cush in the event of a pot hole without bending a wheel, and to rotate the tires (yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, BMW doesn't recommend tire rotation, but that's another story) for maximum life and maximum noise reduction.
Would the handling be a little less razor sharp with 235/45 R-17s as opposed to 225/40 R-18s up front? Yeah, probably a little. That said, am I going to track my car? Nope. So, do I care? Nope. Best Regards, Shipo |
