3L twin turbo engine - which model next?

Hi I understood the 3L twin turbo engine was going into the 5 series (in Australia - it appears in European 5's) but a quick glance of the new Australian 5 series website suggests the new 5 at least for now isn't getting the twin turbo engine (530 -> 540). any ideas which model will next get the 3L twin turbo? the 1 series?

I would have thougth the 5 series would have been a natural progression. That said, it wouldn't be out of e question to make an even hotter hot hatch out or the 1 series. The chasis can handle it.

A 1-series would be a rocket with the twin-turbo engine. Perhaps coming close to the new M3 in 0-100kph times.

Cheers.

^ and for that reason we will NOT see a 135i. They do not want to have a car which could steal potential M3 sales from their own stable. Just look at how much they left on the table (re: potential perfomance) with the 335. They purposely left a big performance gap between the 335 and the M3 to try to justify the massive price difference.

The logical progression is a 535 next but they won't release details of that until they sort out their 525, 530, 540, 545, 550 mess (too many models in my opinion). BMW is as much a marketing company as they are a car manufacturing company.

Seriously though, a 135i would be seriously fast, honestly i don't think it would steal sales from the 3er or anything, as the 130i didn't and that was a very fun and rather fast car.
With the 5er i believe that they will go with the 525i, 530i, 535i and 550i, but yeah i agree with doc on there being too many damn 5er models if they don't delete any...

I've got a hunch that they'll bring the 5er engine range into line with the 3er, so i suspect the 530i may get ditched for the 535i... i didnt think they still had the 540i, but the more 8's the better in my book.

I don't agree that a hotted 1 series would steal sales from the M3. People who buy M's don't cross shop across the brand or brands like that, there's more to a car than 0-100 km/h times. An M car will always be something much more special than a run of the mill BMW IMO.

That's only because you keep seeing mine when you drive past the car wash 100 times a day.

Cheers.

Yes & no, there is still 1 issue with the z4 which irks me, it's too darn heavy!!
Send it off to fat camp, drop 300kgs or so out of it, then throw in the 3.0ltr bi-turbo in it and your talking about a real fun car!

I agree .... it has much greater potential with a small weight loss as the package is great.

You're right astra. There already is a high-powered Z4 with a sweet in-line six.

Mind you, the twin turbo with a PROcede....magic.

Cheers.

Very true though.

With such brilliant M & twin turbo engines today, we can certainly look forward to an exciting future of BMW development.

Cheers.
