Noise from winter Tyres

Fitted my Dunlop SP Wintersport 3D winter wheels (18 inch) and tyres this weekend. First trip out yesterday on motorway there was a really loud 'humming' noise (I assume from the tyres) between 80 and 85 mph. I can only assume this was from the tyres as it wasn't there before.
Has anyone else who has these tyres noticed any unusual noise at speed?

All winter tyres are noisy because the tread blocks move around so much more and the extra space between the blocks causes resonance. Not a lot you can do about it.

Normally the soft nordic snow tires we use here are very quiet.

You'll get a little more noise from brand new winters and then they'll quieten a bit, but they're still usually louder for the reasons Xenon states. I've done around 500 miles on my 3Ds now and they're not much noisier than the summer Dunlops really.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I am really impressed with them in normal driving, as they are at least as quiet if not quieter than my summer Continentals. It is just this very loud resonance at 80-85mph (which just happens to be my normal motorway speed) that concerned me. I will see if it goes away as I get more miles on them.

Are they winter run-flats? My thinking, winter tread blocks along with a stiffer sidewall could be the reason for extra sound levels, shame they have a speed related harmonic issue. Reason to slow down in winter driving.

Yes, they are Winter Run flats. They seem to be quietening down a little now as I get more miles on them.
