Question Best FMIC on the market that requires no cutting?

What's the best FMIC option out there that requires zero cutting and can use the oem piping?

Unfortunately, I don't believe there is any intercooler out there other than the stock one that requires zero cutting and uses the OEM piping. The only thing that would be close is the Wagner unit- i don't know if it requires any trimming. The HPF unit requires some significantly trimming to fit. I tried contacting ETS to see if they could custom build me a 5" unit with the stock couplers but they declined.

Thanks for that information- have you done any data logging to compare vs the stock intercooler?

No I haven't. For me the FMIC was a no-brainer. I had the ETS in my 335 but wanted one which uses the factory couplers. (also for the stealth / stock look)

Curious why the Wagner for the M is $60 more than for the 135

Not sure why you'd consider the Wagner when you could get the Helix. The Wagner is a rip-off of the Helix.

Helix does not require anything to be trimmed other than a 1 inch by 1 inch square that is sticking out of the bumper shield. Other than that it is a direct fit and will perform much better than the Wagner tube and fin intercooler

Just curious, do you feel any power increase from the FMIC alone? I've got 3" DPs, catless mids and the Helix all enroute now. I'm trying to decide in what order to put them on. I'd kind of like to see if I can feel the difference of each instead of doing all at once. Not sure if the FMIC does anything for ya though until software is loaded uncork.

I think I'll probably do the exhaust stuff together and wait a week or two before doing the FMIC. That way if I do have any issues it will be easier to isolate the problem.

Thoughts?

So, your intercooler requires trimming.

Do you have any data comparing the two for your claim?

I have the Helix and the gains are most noticeable at high rpm's. I actually did a baseline pull on my 135i with just a JB4 on map 2 and raceland catless downpipes which yielded 350whp. About an hour later, I had my Helix installed and did another pull and made 370whp. According to the dyno, it made more power everywhere in the rev range, however, on my butt dyno, the gains were most definitely felt in the higher rpms (butt dyno is not sensitive I tell ya). Not sure if you will feel the difference with a FMIC alone as I had software prior to the installation, but I will say that the Helix FMIC is worth the price of admission bar none!

Very cool. Thanks for the info!

I'm wondering, does the improved FMIC with tune necessitate an upgraded charge pipe? Ive had zero issues with mine thus far but can conceive how this could become an issue now.

There doesn't seem to be any problems apart from the earlier 1Ms. I have ordered a ER charge pipe + Forge DVs. I am not sure if I will be installing them with the FMIC or not yet.

Apart from a little bit of extra weight (really, not that much), and san expansion bellow on the elbow, I can't see any negatives. I think it is an insurance policy for future mods.

I just read that ETS has a direct replacement that requires zero trimming. Does anyone know about these guys?

ETC requires zero cutting, but does come with their upgrade couplers, replacing the stock ones.
