This is a question for 335is owners.

Hi,

I used to own a 2008 335i coupe and at about 18,000km to 20,000km I had to add 1 liter of oil before my first service at the dealer.

My question is now that I own a 2011 335is, as soon as I reached 6,000km the iDrive warning message indicated that I was low on oil.

Isn't this a little too soon to be adding oil at this point?

I did take it to the dealer because they did agree, but right now all they did was replaced the oil (added 1 liter) and document it and told me to monitor it and bring it in when it happens again, but it could be part of the breaking in process.

If you own a 335is and had the same thing happen, please post how much oil you added and at what KMs you did it at.

Thanks

This is the exact reason why I dont understand why BMW doesnt put in a regular oil dip stick. It makes no sense to me at all that we have to rely on computers to tell us if our oil is low. There was another post about this regarding a 335i not an is and the computer kept on telling him to add a quart of oil. A week later again, add a quart of oil. He kept on doing what it was telling him and sure enough he was over filling the heck out of it and caused engine problems. The actual problem was the electronic module that monitors the oil was bad and needed to be replaced. So just FYI be careful how much oil you add as it might be an electronic problem not a mechanical one. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info bro!

That is the reason that I took it back to the dealer and let then add the oil, so there will be no question on who is missing up the engine.

This is normal, especially for a new car. They topped off your oil and it's covered under warranty. Nothing to worry about, enjoy the car.

Not really, I don't push the car until about 15,000km, but I will admit that I push her a couple of time on the on ramps, because some jackass that does not let me in.

Cool but have you added any oil yet?

If so at what mileage did you do it?

No, because I did a break in oil change and another one at 6k. Next oil change will be free under normal warranty for me.

Reminds me, few weeks back some ricer was tailgating me on the off ramp, it was raining and cold. I had my winter tires on; I decided to accelerated because he was too close. He tried to stay with me, but next thing I saw in my rear view mirror was that tool lose control and do a 360 into the ditch.

With about 7K miles on my is, I have not had any low oil warnings, but I did have an intermittent low coolant warning at around 6K miles. Took it back and had the dealer top it off.

If a vendor came out with a dipstick modification, I'd probably buy it in a heartbeat

Had to add a quart around 10,000 miles. No problem. I am more amazed that they suggest 15,000 miles. Seems like a lot to me.

AFAIK, these engines are not worn in from factory. You're completing the break in period. Give it another 10k.

thats funny i had to add 1 L at about 10K, my dealer did it as well just to have it on the record.

i pushed my car hard during the summer couple of Airport events and also 30 1/4 mile runs so its normal had the same with my 08 335 as well.

At around 3k miles, the car informed low on oil and the dealership filled it up. It's not surprising to see the engine drinking more oil than expected during break in period and expected in most new cars during break in. I'm at around 16k miles and hadn't had to put extra oil after that so far.

Hi,

My car started displaying lower oil levels around 11K miles. I had to add a quart around 13K miles, then the dealer changed my oil at 13,600 miles. Today I have 23K miles and it still shows full. Lately I have been doing a lot of freeway driving and all is good.
