Squeaking at low speeds

I have a squeaking sound coming from what seems to be under the rear of the my 335xi at low speeds - less than 30 mph. The squeaking is consistent with the rotation of the wheels. (i.e. it squeaks at a faster pace when the car is at higher speeds and at a lower pace at lower speeds.) It seemingly only squeaks once the car is warm and when I am on the accelerator. It has almost never squeaked when coasting.

I have it at the dealership under warranty right now and they can't figure out what it is. They think that spraying some anti-squeak solution on the rotors will help, but I'm not confident in their diagnosis. Any other ideas of what this could be? Thanks!

Could be a wheel bearing, but you really need to get the car up in the air and rotate the wheels to find where the squeek is coming from, see if there's any play, etc.

The dealer did two different things under warranty - they released the parking brake slightly and put some anti-squeaking solution on the rotors. I don't have the squeaking any more, but honestly I'm surprised this corrected the problem.

Since the parking brake engages the rear brakes I suppose after the rotors got hot after driving they expanded just enough to make slight contact with the pads to make the squeaking sound.

Logically it still doesn't make a lot of sense to me of how the squeaking went away either...

I get the expanding of the brakes cuz of the heat and all, but what I don't get is...it didn't happen when the brakes/car were new and it happening now?

Not sure if our cars do this or not, but on my old Audi the calipers would adjust inward as the brake pads wore over time to keep the same distance between the rotor and the pad. The idea was that if you had brand new pads on versus ones that were at the end of their life the pedal feel would be the same to the driver. Theoretically if this is happening but the ebrake hasn't been used in some time then the rear pads may not be released as far as they should have been from the ebrake. The tech told me that I should use the ebrake at least once per month to make sure it's being used. That theory is pretty far out there, but it's the best I could come up with.

The rear brakes also activate when in cruise control going down steep hills to slow the car, and when the car gets out of shape, the rear brakes automatically engage to settle it down.

Mine is doing this as well. Sounds like it is coming from the drivers side. Brought it to the dealership and they couldn't find anything as well.

... I have this too on somedays...

I kinda forget about this "issue" as I did look into it slightly before.

Something with the brake sensor? maybe not. I get it at low speeds - less than 25 or so mph and do not notice it at higher speeds - i have tried to listen for it when driving 40-50+ mph and the sound just isn't there...

Yeah I get it under 20mph or so...Kind of embarrassing when you're driving down the main street in Newport, RI with the windows down and people are staring at you.

My guess is it's not the rotor expanding, it's the caliper's closing performance being degraded. "Hung Up" was the term we used to use.

My guess would have been wheel bearing, but assuming your car is a 2011 (based on your join date), that'd be unlikedly

While I don't have an xi, I experienced the same issue. Squeaking at low speeds, only when the car was warm. When I searched the forum, it seems to be a common problem with the brakes. My dealer said it was the brake sensors and replaced them, front and rear, and put new front rotors on as well. The sound has not returned as of yet.

Rear e-brake shoes are sticking. I'll make a new thread detailing the issue in few minutes.

I just heard back from the dealer and they said that the heat shields were touching the rotors an they had to bend them back into place and that all is fine now... So I will be able to pick up the car tomorrow (Thursday) late afternoon and let you guys know if that did the trick!!
