I went for the 118d. (Test drove the 116i and 118d).
I do a lot of miles so wanted a diesel for fuel costs but also like country roads on a weekend so wanted a bit of get up and go (116d looked a bit light on power / torque to what I'm used to). Both engines i tried felt good though |

My thought process was thus. I discounted the 118i on running costs. 116d has too little power for its size weight, had the same in a Mini and it was just about sufficient. Wished to try the 8 speed auto as will use locally more often than not, and has had rave reviews. So in a choice between 118d auto v 120d manual as cost about the same, opted for the former. As to between 116i v 118d. Checked on noise levels and surprisingly the diesel is more quiet, it will retain slightly better residuals and costs only £30 tax and is more fuel efficient. So over its lifetime probably makes up for its higher initial purchase cost by lower running costs. In effect both cost about the same over 3 years. So just down to personal preference. Not tried a diesel before, thus opted for the 118d. Subsequently had a test drive and rather fell for it.

i went for the 116i. I have a 120i e81 at the moment and honestly only when i thrashed it on the test drive did i notice any difference at all. Insurance is coming down, running costs are coming down but hardly losing any performance. Fantastic.
Thought about a 118d but i worked out the maths for my mileage based on current fuel prices. It took 3 years to pay for its self so it didn't seem to make sense. If you do a lot of miles though it will work out.

I went for the 116i Business Sportline...why? Left me enough room to tick the options which I liked most and for The Netherlands the 116i engine is more than enough and also it will be similar to my current car regarding hp.

ill be honest I wanted a 116d for cheap UK road tax and torque but ended up with a 116i was quite surprised how well it drives and still 40mpg , I dont do lots of miles so fuel costs not really an issue to me..

I bought the 116i. For me it was either 116i or 118i (diesel engines are not allowed were I live...well they are now, but not when I ordered the car). I test drove both cars bacj to back for 1 hour each, both with the auto transmission. I found a very small difference bewteen the 2 cars...I expected a big difference in terms of performance, based on their stats, but to me they were very similar and I could not justify the extra € 3.000 for the 118i. Ι opted for the 116i with more extras!! In the future if I want more power, I can have a chip or tuner box to the car.

among those I'd say 118i, great bang-for-the-buck ratio and low on fuel-consumption it seems. But there is alot coming into play as to what country you live in, petrol vs diesel-prices, taxes and how many miles you drive a year and so.

Having test driven the 116i +118d i chose the 118d ,the 116 i was very good ,far better than the previous version, but the 118d had MUCH more torque ,0 to 60 times don't really indicate normal driving its more 30 t0 50 that is used ,I only do around 5000 miles a year so although the extra economy of the diesel is great, its really the "pulling power" I prefer I know it costs more for the 118d but in my experience most of the difference is recouped with a higher resale price

Also the price difference between the two will easily be recouped in less than a year due to fuel cost savings. |

I was told early Jan for delivery, then it was early Feb, then it was mid feb, at which point i said don't give me a 61 plate car 2 weeks before the reg change, so thats when i ended up in March. I guess the bottleneck is shipping them into the UK.

Maybe something to do with mine being a 116i Sport, BMW were running a low apr PCP finance deal on them at then end of last year, so demand for them might have been higher than the supply.
Just a guess. My wait will have been 13 1/2 weeks by the time i get it.

I test drove a 116i... It was nice... I then drove the 116d.. Torque was quite good... I then test drove the 118i.... Which I much prefered, however I wanted excellent fuel economy and low tax..... After much debates and haggling with the dealer I managed to get a deal on the 118i, but I continued with the phone calls and the "I'm not sure" and eventually got the 118d at the same deal as the 118i....
WINNER i think...... |
