Navigation by Name

Need help from other Nav users.
Many times I know destination name and approx miles, but not address or specific Nav category. Is there a way one can enter business or restaurant name to find new destination candidates?
I have used Garmin in the past with this feature and found very useful.
So looking for help to see if it is possible with BMW Nav.

Sounds like POI Search (Point Of Interest Searching)..... umm.. how can i put this in simple terms?... NO!

I have heard that the new models willl get it POI search, but I do know for sure that 2008 BMWs with NAV will get Google.com POI search and NAV features. It is going to be the best i swear it. Google has a great database and their maps are real good and specific.

I must say, the current nav kinda sucks. It's bad enough its a lil limited, but i hate the response times with the DVD based way. Voice command could be better.

There is a way to look up POIs by name in the post-March'07 build cars. You still need to have an idea of what category to look in, but this is much better than what was available before. Also, the system resposne time and voice commands are significantly improved over previous models.

Not totally true. My Sept '05 build can do it now that the software has been updated to 25.01.01.

Obviously, there isn't an internet connection hooked up to our navigation systems, so you would somehow need to convert all the google maps data to BMW friendly DVD. I noticed that it's that same company, NAVTEQ, supplies the maps for both Google and BMW so maybe it's wouldn't be *that* hard. If you did do all that work, however, I'm not sure it would be legal.

I just wonder if/when they implement the Google technology will they be able to update current cars using a new Progman flash. Something tells me that current cars will be "incompatible."

Kind of analogous to the RTTI. From what I've read, the plan is to roll out 3 phases. The first is currently available. The second can be updated on current cars. But the third will require some new hardware and thus current autos will not be able to receive the upgrade.

Try this one.

After clicking the link a few times, I new screen opened with a working version of the video. It's a very impressive system, I hope that makes it to the US (the video shows a European address).

Oh that.

That´s not a big deal. It just allows you to go to Google and send the address/destination to your car.

Has nothing to do with using Google maps in the car, which is not in the cards.

As to when this will reach the U.S., probably 2 years off.

Let me quote from an article I wrote which ran in October 2006:

By 2009, BMW hopes to add a “My Info” section to the BMW NA Web site as part of the BMW Assist Convenience Plan. This would enable a driver (or a colleague or spouse, for that matter) to enter destination info via the Web, which is then transferred via SMS to the car.

Ja, my pleasure. The only question is which cars will be compatible with the feature. That remains to be seen.
