"Blackbox" To Detect Custom Tunes?

Hey everyone,

I'm new to the BMW world and I'm wondering if the rumors about a blackbox that logs engine parameters is true? I've heard that piggyback systems can avoid being detected, where as flash based systems can be detected by a determined dealer? If there was an actual black box, I would just log engine parameters, such as PSI, WGDC, knock, timing, etc. In which case, a piggyback would still be detected....

Can anyone comment? I've noticed that a lot of folks are successfully running aggressive setups, even running meth setups, without reading about any blown engines... That's very encouraging.

Personally, I'm looking to either run Cobb or JB4, still weighing my options.
