The Mechanic Said Misfire...

56k miles. Driving today after leaving a shell pump and the car, if this is any way to explain it, began to stutter. Not only did the the car stutter in terms of engine noise, but the shifter it self was extremely rough. Even the needle as i execrated was stuttering. My warrantee is up so I drove it right to the mechanic I use. He said that my fourth cylinder was not working and the car misfired. He explained that eh would replace the coils and the plugs and this would fix the problem...

Does anybody have any experience with this at all?

Do you have any experience with the engine section?

Yes. This sounds a lot like a problem I had a few weeks ago. My car is a 2006 325i with 57,000 miles. I went out to start my car one evening and it idled very rough. Accleration was poor. Did a code scan at Advance Auto and got a "Cylinder #5 misfire" or words to that affect. The problem with the poor idle seemed to happen suddenly.

Since the scan was not specific as to the exact cause, I took it to dealer for a full diagnostic. It turned out to be a bad coil. They troubleshot by swapping cylinder #2 coil with cylinder #5 and the error code followed to Cylinder #2. Since the car was still driveable (barely), I picked up (1) coil at the dealer ($60), drove home, and replaced it myself. The dealer left the bad coil in Cylinder #2 so it was easy. Coils #1-#3 are easy to get to. Coils #4 - #6 may require removal of the plastic cowl at base of windshield. Not hard, but takes a bit of time. You may be able to get to #4 without removing the cowl since the boot of the coils are rubber and are fairly flexible. It definately gets harder for removal of #5 and #6. I think there is a DIY that shows cowl removal under spark plug replacement topic.
