Bleeding abs pump without setting car to bleed mode?

Is it possible for me to fit a new abs pump and bleed the brakes without setting the car to bleed mode?

Read somewhere you can bleed it , get the the car and pump the brakes and that fills the pump up and then you re bleed everything and its ok? or is that a load of bs?

any help appreciated

cheers
