320D M Sport MPG
New to this forum so please forgive me if this has been asked before - I did do a search but couldn't find the answer!
I have just upgraded my Honda Civic 2.2 CTDi to a BMW 320D M Sport Coupe (2008) and in general love the car - however the fuel consumption seems to be rather high compared with my old Honda. In the Honda I would get a weekly average of about 48MPG and on a run which I do frequently I averaged high 50's taking it easy on a mix of 'A' and 'B' roads which are fairly quiet but not traffic free - so I would stick between 50 and 60. In the BM I am averaging only 41MPG during the week and on the same longer run I managed to get it up to 51MPG driving like an old granddad! I expected the BM to be considerably better than the Honda comparing official figures but it is quite a bit worse. The BM does however have the 19" wheels which I would guess will have a detrimental effect on the fuel consumption and although I have not checked I would guess that it is a bit heavier also as it is certainly bigger. The other possibility is that the fuel computers are not that accurate and that the Honda never did what it said (the speedo always read 4MPH faster than you were going throughout the range). My car has the Efficient dynamics package so has Stop/Start, Gear change indicator etc and I do try to drive for economy so I'm at a loss what else to do to improve the MPG. Any thoughts / suggestions? |

You really do need to make a brim to brim check, as otherwise you may be concerned over nothing.
Tyre pressures are an obvious check, but also worth running the hidden menu for ECT, cool running can be a cause of lower mpg. Check just to clear the obvious. Another factor could be injection quality, not knowing its previous use. I'd run decent fuel (for the cleaning additive package) and/or an additive like Millers, to ensure there is best performance from the engine. HighlandPete |

On mine I can above 55mpg on a motorway run, though around town I've had it drop as low as 39mpg when heavy foot comes into play.
Is yours manual or auto

Mines a manual with only 35K miles - it's also an approved used BMW from a main dealer so I would hope that it had been given a good check over. Probably do need to bite the bullet and fill it up but that's an experience in itself these days. I put £50 in the other day and it went to 3/4 but it wasn't empty before. Must be a big tank on these!

I get about 55mpg on the motorway. If I use V-Power I actually see around 61.
Around town its about 42.

I've an overall average of 42mpg over the last two years. Last run was gentle at 45mpg.
I really think you'll push to get over 45 on a regular basis. As a contrast, we bought a Jaguar XF 2.2D about 8 months ago. Jaguar touted 52mpg, we generally see 35mpg average, which is well below the 42mpg I thought we'd get... Love the cat, but a 520D may have been easier to run! |

I find around town sensible normal driving 45mpg is the norm. Motorway runs on average give anywhere 52 to 55. Get foot happy and they all drop

Depends on the kind of driving you do.
Mine's shocking round town in heavy traffic, but happily does 50+mpg on the motorway at a steady 70. (I seem to average 450miles to 3/4 a tank for usual driving) Rather less when caned... The OBC is not expecially accurate. Mine reckons about 39mpg in the 2 years I've had the car. Based on brim->brim I'd say it's at least 5mpg better than that. |

Plus the honda was quite torquey so less effort and probably a lot lighter to pull.
