BMW Assist

Do any of you guys use it?
My free 4 year period just ended and I just got charged $199 for a year to renew it. They said I have 30 days to decide whether or not to cancel it and would still get the full refund back.

Anyone have any thoughts or comments about this? Thanks!

The only thing i use that's Assist related is sending address from google maps direct to the car haha.

question though, how did they automatically charge you? I don't remember them taking CC info when signing up for it or anything.

I believe if you still want to use your phones bluetooth for hands free calls or voice control its required that you have the assist subscription.
It's been a year or so since I've read the fine print though so I could be mistaken.

BMW Assist subscription is not required for using bluetooth or voice control.

I got a one year subscription when I bought my CPO e92. Never used it.

Sending from Google Maps to the car is nice, but not $200/yr nice -- and would be completely unnecessary if iDrive were a lot smarter about searching and addresses (sometimes you have to pick the right zip code after specifying a street name or you can't enter the desired house number!! ) Other than that, stolen vehicle recovery can give you an insurance break, but probably not much, and remote unlock is basically pointless if you have Comfort Access since it's practically impossible to lock your keys in the car that way. Automatic collision notification might be nice in a really bad accident I guess, as would SOS, but again not sure if it's worth it -- and someone made a thread a while back saying they asked BMW Assist whether they would deny an SOS call just because someone didn't have a subscription, and BMW said "We would never deny the use of any safety features of our cars to a customer in an emergency." And you can also get better roadside assistance for less elsewhere.

I doubt I'll renew when my subscription runs out. And no, cancelling BMW Assist does not kill your Bluetooth.

thats what I've always assumed as well, you won't get the automatic response, but if you pushed the SOS button I'm sure they wouldn't say sorry, before we connect you whats your credit card number so we can reactivate your membership

Not at all. When I first got my last BMW with CA, I was quickly annoyed that the doors would lock and unlock and the lights flash every time I sprayed the door handles in the car wash. "Leave the fob in the car", everyone said. "It's smart, it won't lock you out". That worked good for about 7 months........then I found myself looking at my fob through the doors that would not unlock. With my phone sitting beside it........

Since then I always remove the laser-cut key and put it in my pocket before I leave the fob in the car.

Assist has nothing to do with Bluetooth anything.

The other thing you need assist for is the iPhone app that allows you to lock unlock remotely and send maps from the app.

I can't see paying 199 a year for any of those features.

To put things into perspective, GM's OnStar for the similar package is $799 annually.
