Individual Options with Associated Costs and Time

Just got some info back from Regional concerning Some Individual Requests I made:

Frozen Black - $5000 with no additional time (I am going to assume that this is the same for Frozen Gray, which I am now going to go with).

Deviated Stitching - $5150 in addition to the cost of Full Merino. I requested black stitching in the Sakhir leather. Here are further details:

Six weeks additional lead time would be required for this upholstery, 12 weeks all together

The Development Team is not accepting new special order upholstery requests until mid-July.

Stitching on the Sakhir leather parts on the lower part of the door, armrests and door handle, seat side parts and headrests.

No stitching on seat main parts, middle headrest rear, upper part of the door panel and dashboard upper part because it is black leather there. Also not on the dashboard lower part, because there is no seam.

Has anyone gotten an offical price from BMWNA on the leather dash option for an Indivdual interior color? Also, any time extensions?

No. It was $2200 on my 550i and that didn't include the doors. I am hoping less on the M5 since the letter dash is a mainstream component now.

On the other hand the price of the deviated stitching you quoted is daylight robbery.

I would love for BMW to explain this:

I am driving a $18,555 Chevy Cruze rental car. It has black leather seats with light gray contrasting stitching.

Why does contrasting stitching cost $5500 on the M5?

Evidently there is a whole process here. You submit your question to your dealer, they send it to the Regional Rep who speaks directly to Germany (kind of like Jimmy Olsen speaking to Superman) they get back to the Rep and they contact your dealer.

The whole process took 2 weeks.

I have requested the cost of the full leather dash and associated time, but my dealer was a bit concernerned that the statement about no custom orders until mid July might be in play on this one. I will update when I hear. Hoping others have made this same request so an earlier respnse may be available.

I did have a build date of June. The individual interior with leather dash pushed the build date back to July.

Your statement does not entail the conclusion that it should cost $5,500 to have color contrasting stitching. I think this is what you mean:

The correct logic would be as follows:
1) contrasting stitching has zero marginal cost on modern production lines
2) BMW has found that while the average price of an M5 is $100k, some of their customers view the car as much more valuable and would pay more if it cost more.
3) BMWs pricing team has found out that offering a suite of outlandishly priced options, allow them to capture that surplus by widening the price range of the car. So while offering stitching at $500 would be profitable, it would allow this segment with high consumer surplus to keep too much of the value. So by charging 10x a normal price, BMW can extra value from these customers.
4) BMW has found its value extraction approach does not cost market share as Mercedes offers even less flexibility.
5) BMW goal is to extract every dollar of consumer surplus in their transactions
6) Chevy on the other hand must compete on value.

I think we all have the same dealer so will likely learn at the same time.

Update:
Just got this cryptic info back form the Regioanl Rep:

"Sorry - not good news. The Leather Dashboard is not available on the M5, and the upper door sills are not available in leather"

I immediately referred my CA to the bulletin with the famous "v" footnote explaining that the Full Individual Interior with Black Lether dash is avaiable for the M5.

So I honestly dont know what gives.

Anyone else gotten a Full Individual successfully ordered stateside or gotten a response about avaialbility/cost/time?

Perhaps you should ask for a quote for "Option 4M5 Leather Dashboard"

Not same as full leather but a possible fallback.

UPDATED Update:
This is what I got:

Pricing for Platinum BMW Individual Full Merino Leather is $6825 retail.

Content of BMW Individual 'Merino finely structured' leather in Platinum:
- Front and rear seats including headrests
- Rear of seat backrest front seats
- Inserts in door trims, armrest and door-pull handle
- Door trim, bottom (except area around the map pocket)
- Centre console including armrest
- Instrument panel lower section

Contents in 'Nappa' leather black:
- Instrument panel top section (option code 4M5)
- Door upper-arm trim panels and door trim, bottom (at the map pocket)

For M5: including headliner Alcantara and instrument panel with leather finish.

Can anyone comment if anything that is included in Standard Full leather is left off this list?

Interesting.

I was quoted $9500 (including piano trim).
Is the $6825 total price for Individual + upgrade to full. Or is that cost just for the upgrade only?

Based only on the wording above I take this as total ($1,825 adder to Extended Individual). But I have requested confirmation.
Seems to make sense, because if you add the $1080 for Piano we pay, you are looking at $7925. Add add little bit for converting to Celsius and you got $9,500.

My dealer told me today it's 5K for Brilliant White (Individual color) and 6800$ for Full Extended Individual (ie 1800$ uplift over extended) .

I am amazed that people will pay so much for leather they will never touch. What's the point? Is it just because it's available?

$5000 of that is the cost of getting a decent color. I for example like cream white leather. The Silverstone is gray white. I could live with he Silverstone, but I will always be slightly unhappy and wish they had made it a warmer white.

Then the additional $1800 for full individual is the cost of not staring at plastic dashboard in a $100k car.

Makes a ton of sense to me than buying something which looks less nice than my 550 interior.

I love to touch my leather dash. I was actually touching it this morning on the way in to work and saying to myself...I'm glad this isnt plastic. Is that so wrong?
