Rear Light unit making me bonkers..

I have recently just changed my rear lights to some Depo smoked LED'S.
The problem I have now found is that both outer LED sections are lighting up when braking but not the inner part of the rear light. Just to be clear this is all within the rear light NOT the boot light.

Then I thought ill take the bulb holders out of the depo lights and check them with all the standard bulbs back in. For some reason the light at the bottom nearest to the boot lid on both sides doesnt ever light up. Now im confused to wether or not the light ever did work. I have never had any light out errors on the dash and surely these bulbs must serve a purpose.

I have posted two pics one pointing out the bulb in question in the bulb holder and also which part of the light unit I mean.
I have changed all bulbs and even got a replacement bulb holder on one side just incase, as I know E92 models had problems with them.

Can anyone clarify what this bulb is for and why it mite possibly not be working.

That is a strange setup. I did try and stamp on my pedal or push hard to check this but it still didn't work. I'll get my friend to check tomorrow

i just bought a pair of depo smoked LED tail lights and an anti flicker kit. still havent installed because i dont want to have any issues. the earlier models have problems when running LEd's. good luck. did you also install the impedance boxes or get lights coded?

They came with impendence boxes and have worked fine. They only thing is the instructions are crap and I didn't realise at first you have to use one of your existing bulbs for the centre strip tail light.
The lights all work fine and look great, I just can't get my head around this other bulb that only works under hard braking.

Maybe you should replace with a new bulb.

Tried a new bulb and bulb holder, but after driving behind another E90 today I noticed that only the outer light comes on when he braked, so robreed27 must be right.
I just haven't got round to someone driving my car and slammin on the brakes to check yet
