I-Drive just died

About 1 month ago I got the latest Progman update because I was tired of the periodic freeze on my system. Today the screen went totally blank and then every few minutes while driving it would turn gray for split second and then go black again.

I tried turning the engine off several times during my drive at stop lights to no avail. Let it sit for 30min or so and now it appears to have recovered.

I know that there are others with similar problems, I'm curious if you would try to get fixed or simply wait until something else breaks so you can kill two birds with on stone. Dropping off my car for a couple of days is a pain. I wouldn't mind as much if only the navi were dead, but everything is dead. I'm hopeful that this is a rare occurence, but don't know.

The CCC is a box behind your dash containing your iDrive's hardware (computer board) and includes your CD and DVD players. Stands for "Car Communication Center" or something like that. It goes for something like $2500.

Sounds like they replaced both the CCC and a power-supply part (the relay). Be glad you have a warranty!

I had mine completely changed -- all components including the screen -- as well as a section of the wiring loom back last December and I still get exactly what the OP is describing several times a month. You'll also notice that the green LED by the SOS button will light while the screen is gray.

I've found that if I turn the car off and let it sit for five minutes or so it will come right back. I've not been able to correlate it to anything I'm doing at the moment it happens or to weather conditions. I have, though, noticed that it happens more often when I start the car and then drive a short distance and stop the engine. But even this isn't all the time. It's very sporadic.

SoYank,
When you say that 5min and it comes right back, I assume you mean that the Idrive comes back in the proper "on" state. I infer that there was no improvement after they attempted to repair it and so you're just living with it?

As far as you know, is there any other loss of functionality besides Navi or radio when the screen goes blank?

Yes, after five or ten minutes of being OFF, it comes back to life as if nothing were wrong (I know better, though).

Once they replaced all of the components it was 100% better because before that it was completely dead. They had to send the CD and DVD drives back to Germany to extract the discs, too. But it still occurs every now and then. Since I have a workaround, I have, for the most part, been living with it but it's irritating. I'm planning to take it back for several other problems such as a surge at 4000 rpm and the missing arrow display. I'm also going to ask them again if they have to reload the software would they (please) set my windows, sunroof, and mirrors to close with the remote like the European cars do.

I have the same problem, it only started happening after I upgraded to v.25.

Is anyone on an older software version who has this problem?

Probably obvious from my original post, but I never had it go totally dead like this until after the upgrade.

It happened on my original software load from December 2005. I think that would be V.19. It didn't manifest itself until the car was ten months old. I think I now have either v.20 or v.21 and the problem continues.

Dang, it just happened again -- after I had driven for only ~ 1 min, and I think the first time it happened was a very short drive too. When/if you get this fixed let me know. I'm waiting for something else to break before my next trip to BMW.

Likewise, if you get a solution at your end, please let me know so I can try to get it fixed here.

Mine just started doing the exact same thing. i-drive was updated a few weeks ago for the pop-up arrow problem. I will probably drop it off this weekend. Dont mind dropping it off, cause they give out 335 as loaners (Ottos in West Chester, PA)

Well my idrive just went south but came back.

started car and noticed the idrive screen came up but date was like --/--/--
and time was --:--
idrive knob was lose. no resistance. I could even spin it.
pulled over. shutdown car, restart... the same.
Well, I figured I needed to do a "reboot" and of course I forgot what to do to do that... so I left it as is.
btw, all buttons on steering wheel did not work.
After about 5 minutes of driving, the screen went from the 4 menus
to the "BMW" brown background screen.
and then, it all came back to normal.

gremlims?
who knows, but it has been working fine for 3 days now.

It went dead again last week so I decided to drive to dealership while it was still dead so they could confirm the problem -- which they acknowledged. Technician said that it probably needed CCC and I said yes, that seems to be consensus. I was hoping that they could in accord, get permission from BMW to order the new components so I wouldn't have to drop off my car for diagnosis. Anyway, they said it doesn't matter, still need to bring it in to have it offiically diagnosed. I don't undersand this.

Since my confidence is low that any swap out will actually repair problem, I figured I would wait until I need to drop off car for something else. Ugh
