335i 8at sport+ = fully manual

I found out accidentally that on sport+ and in manual mode the tranny will not shift for you and the car just bounces on the rev limiter until you shift manually.. Also the kickdown button does nothing and it will stay in the gear you choose. Im really impressed and happy because I feel like I have so much more control. The whole forum might already know this but I had no idea. In regular sport the kickdown will take over and Im not sure if it will switch gears itself if you hit redline and dont shift. Just wanted to post this for those of you that didnt know this. have fun.

That's cool.

Wonder why that doesn't happen in "sport" mode.
I believe sport+ is sport plus DTC on.

While in sport mode and in manual mode, the trans will up shift at red line? But, only at red line and not before, right?
Auto kick down is also active in sport with manual mode?

Depends on much one step on accelerator, normal driving:

Comfort mode: Shift at 2,000rpm
Sports mode: Shift at 3,000 rpm

It has gone lower than I've seen. I've had it very low and still kick down did not interfere. You have to pay more attention for sure. If you forget it does it you can rev it too high and for too long. Fully manual. The car is getting faster and faster. Coming from Procede n54 I'm still very impressed with the car with this tranny.

Sport will shift at full redline even in manual. Kick down also takes over. Not in sport + though.

It'll only change down 1 gear at a time if the revs are so low that' it'll stall.

+1 I can confirm that Sport in Manual mode will automatically up shift at redline. It will not up shift sooner. It's like a failsafe for your transmission. Haven't tried it in Sport+... but now I'm curious.

By kick down, I'm assuming everyone means down shift. It will auto down shift to prevent stalling. The downshifting is really smooth. Again, I'm not sure about Sport+... but I believe it auto downshifts for you in Sport+ as well.

What I mean by kickdown is that extra pedal travel past the resistance click. If you push the pedal past the resistance it will downshift to the lowest gear for the rpm's as possible. It will not do this in sport+. Beware in sport plus not to blow your engine because it will not shift. I'm still sometimes forgetting and shifting too late.

I see what you mean now. Yeah, I forget to shift sometimes too. But slowly I'm getting used to it. It gets confusing for me when I drive my manual car now. I sometimes try to paddle shift, when no paddles exist. I think in about a month, it'll be 2nd nature on both cars.

You still won't blow the engine though.
There is a rev limiter that electronically prevents the engine from going past it's true built in rev limit. On accel, at red line, it will just bounce as the rev limiter kicks in.

In an AT the ECU won't let you select a gear that's too low, such that will the gear will cause the rpm's to go beyond red line. That's a mechanical type of over rev, and in the MT world that's called a "money shift".

I traded in my previous car (which was 6MT) for a 6AT e92. One of my biggest complaints since have been with the 6AT shifting at redline for me.

Knowing that the F30 will not shift for me at redline in Sport+ will definitely make me look at the new 4-series in 8AT when it comes out instead of moving back to a 6MT(which I enjoy but do not miss during rush hour)...

What if your power sliding the car (which the f30 does very well with a tune especially ) and want to stay at the end of redline?. not shifting for you makes you have more control. More like a manual but with added convenience of an auto. If we want a fail safe just put it in sport.

If you track your car, you'll appreciate the transmission obeying everything you tell it: i.e. not up shift unless I tell it to. Sometimes I find the transmission shifting at the wrong time (say while I am negotiating a turn) and it can upset the car's balance. Or, it would up shift too early while I still want it to stay in lower gear for greater acceleration.

The N55 produces the majority of it's torque well before red line.
If you want to kick the rear end out and power slide, select a gear that will put you around 4k rpm, then depending on you good you are at initiating the slide you'll have plenty of torque and plenty of rpm to keep the rear tires spinning.

By the time the engine is around 6K most of the torque is way down, so trying a power slide near red line isn't the best approach.

You're right, the 335i kicks out the rear nicely in sport+ mode. At a modest 30mph I got the rear to come out very controllably.

I just hate when my foot unintentionally goes down too far (like my e90 did) when I'm sliding and shifts. It puts an end to it usually. I'm just happy we have a choice and this tranny is so performance oriented

I also think when dsc is completely turned off you have to shift yourself in manual FYI.
