Where to sell car?

I'm looking to advertise my 2002 E46 330i for private sale shortly as I have a new F30 on order.

Where do people recommend advertising? AutoTrader is the obvious choice, but has anyone had success anywhere else?

I'm in West Sussex if that makes any difference.

I sold my f30 320d recently. Sadly wasnt a great experience at the start. So many timewasters and dreamers taking the mick with ridiculous offers. Found gumtree opened me up to tele sales calls. No response on scphock. I didn't bother with ebay as they wanted a fair bit for a classified ad. Autotrader was the best but be prepared to put up with some nonsense. I essentially cut off people who wanted to knock 100s off by putting 'very close offers only' I did price very reasonable an all. I used the unlimited advert option so it didnt matter how long it took to sell. Essentially helps you avoid panic selling when the advert is close to ending. Think it was around 80 quid but was money well spent. Do your research and hold your nerve. If your cars good priced well it will eventually go to someone who knows their stuff. I eventually got a decent fella who paid pretty much full price. Seemed to know his beemers so hope he looks after my ex pride and joy

Holy thread resurrection!

You know you are giving advice about selling cars to the OP who posted 8 years ago?

Maybe the OP still has his car as no-one gave him any advice on where to sell it?

Lol its fast becoming a classic. why on earth was it one of the top posts. I'd presume old ones disappear near the bottom! Shame on previous forum members for not posting single reply to the fella. That's the bigger crime

Yeah to be fair I'm about to sell the other halves Ford Fiesta as her new car is impending. Last time I looked I think Autotrader was about £70 which is steep and the price has risen far quicker than inflation. Might give Wizzle a go. Any other recommendations?

Think its 80 for an unlimited ad which almost forces you into it as not much more than the 6 week package. But then again I knew I would hold out for a decent price as was a fab car. My mates had joy with facebook marketplace but was for a cheaper runabout.

I tried Wizzle and BMW Stratstone and Sytner were bidding against each other for my X3 M40d on it. Went up about £1k higher than best trade in offer I’d had.

Wasn’t quite enough, so tried autotrader, still sold to a trader on there, but got another £1250 over the Wizzle price, so worth the £80 for me.

Yeah I'm talking a desired price of £5500 so a bit of a funny one. I'll try Wizzle and if I get an offer of £5300-£5400 I'll take it to save the hassle of selling private.

I recenty used Wizzle and found it didn't work at all for me. All bids a lot lower than WBAC.
Autotrader worked in the end for me but I think you do need to have patience and wait for the right buyer plus as other have said you need to ignore/filter the silly phone call bid chancers.

^ this.

I sold on AT a few months ago and you will get inundated with stupid offers well below asking but if you ignore them and assuming you have priced it right and the car is mint, it will sell for what you want. Usually well above wizzle, trade etc

It doesn’t work for everything, depends what you’re selling. I was selling a 10 month old X3 M40d and private buyers weren’t calling at all, not one. I know it was priced right because plenty of traders were.

I guess for expensive newer cars people would rather go through a dealer and private buyers are few and far between.

And the fact there aren't many people that can finance a £40k car without going to a dealer. I certainly couldn't.

That’s what I was getting at really, cheaper goes go ok because of that, more expensive not so much.

And you’ll always get more on autotrader for a car under £15k than in Wizzle, Wizzle is still traders buying to move on and make a profit.

It’s a good point though, Wizzle is only useful for higher priced cars or if you want to move on quickly and easily. Autotrader for most other things, you’re right.

Sold my 2017 S5 for £28k, so not an old or cheap car....I guess the fact that it still had 1 years extended warranty remaining may have helped.

I didn’t mean to say it’s impossible, just more difficult as far as I can see. The 3 cars I’ve tried to sell have all had plenty of warranty left, the most recent being over 2 years remaining, and they’ve all been priced lower than anything else at a dealers by some margin. It still sold via autotrader, just not to a private buyer.

That is my view, I do not think the excess gained over a fair trade by a private sale is worth the hassle.
