I agree with the original post but I will sacrifice it as long as I get to continue to drive a BMW. Trade-off is worth it.

BMW uses relatively soft pads. The downside is excessive dust. The upsides are better stopping power and longer rotor wear.

I lilke a little brake dust look, I feel it looks a little sportier. I cant stand it, when its really black.

Cleaning them is not too much of an effort. I generously spray Eagle Wheel Cleaner over it, and let it sit. After a few minutes, I would blast those brake dust away with my electric hi-pressure power wash gun.

Once the tires are dry, I would spray Armour-All over the tires, and drive around the neighbor.

Sometimes I wish that BMW would allow us to substitute in our own Axxis/PBR brake pads when they do the brakes under warranty. Hell, I'd pay for them just to get rid of that freakin' black dust crap! :mad:

I washed my car yesterday, drove to work, drove to the doctor and back to work again. That was about 75 miles. My rims were quite dirty. The car is new. Does it get any lesser once broken in a bit? Probably not but I was just wondering.

I think so. 6MT down shift reduces that.

I switched them on my E46 to Axxis Deluxe Pads for less dust - they where maybe 30 percent less dusty and not as black, but they sucked compared to the BMW pads - I would rather clean my rims than have the Axxis pads again. Best option I have found is Wheel Wax - put it on every few months and cleaning is much easier!

yea, i swapped my pads for the axxis/pbr combo, its too bad i'm outta warranty on that if somethin came up. i'll take the bite for that for less brake dust.

well i agree that the brake dust is a pain but i dont agree that only bmw has this stuff, i see plenty of Mercedes and Audis out there with just the most dirtiest rims you can see, caked in that dust...

my mazda3 was just as bad, if not worse

i've learned to just deal with it. it's a tradeoff for great stopping power

just use a good wheel wax and you'll see it takes a much more time to build up a noticeable amount of brake dust...

and its easier to clean when you do finally go for the wash

Just a little tip don't spray the tire shine on wipe it on. Doing so will keep the wheels cleaner longer.

The brake dust clings to the stray dressing. My wheels were nasty in a day since the dealer cleaned it up for delivery.

My wheels aren't real smooth. Could there be cosmoline on the rims too?

That's what I did too! I bought new wheels in "brake dust color" just so it wouldn't be as noticeable. Dark Gunmetal FTW!

Brake Dust will always be a bi-product of performance. Centric posi-quiets are out right now - they dust a lot less still hold a good amount of bite to them. We've approached Axxis several times now - still nothing released from them. I'll probably hit up Akebono soon for you guys - but most of you guys get free pads with your car's warranty, so the brake pad market isn't rushing to cater to BMW community.

We dun get free pad in Canada. I used to have Akebono pads on my E46 and they are almost dustless and still having oem stopping power. But too bad that they only offer for the front on my E46. So hope they have release both front & rear for E9X asap.
