from what i've heard, it's a real pain in the ass to install. and you can break a lot of stuff while doing it.

i've also heard this is really hard to install. if i remember correctly, the metal post under the knob doesn't line up for some reason... go figure.

i thought i wanted one as soon as i saw it in the M5

so read a DIY on it (i know it's out there somewhere, but i searched and couldn't find it posted here)

when i read bang & olufsen designed/manufactured the part it explained the $80 price tag. i wonder if they design anything else for BMW

Here's an e-mail I received from Evan @ Tischer

Quote:
Mike,

This part is 65827839520, list 88.24, online 70.59. It's currently on national backorder in the US...so would take a couple weeks to arrive from Germany.

It does fit the non-M's...however we hear there is a small gap between it and the console.

Thanks!

Lightbulb Insight into the new M3 knob...

Quote:
Originally Posted by phattbam View Post

I bought the knob for the M3 thinking that it would be a closer match to my 335i coupe. It was not. Check out the photos below. While it does in fact snap directly onto the iDrive hub (white piece underneath the knob shown in Photo #3), there is an unsightly gap (compare Photo #1 and Photo #2). Note that there is also slight color variation between the knob and my brushed aluminum trim (Photo #4). The M3's brushed aluminum trim is specifically called ‘blue-gray’, which might explain this difference in color. It won't be noticable for those with wood trim.

Now, after doing some additional research, I have determined that the black escutcheon trim plate, which encircles the menu button and knob on the console, is different on the M3. On a non-M car, this trim plate is almost flat (actually slightly recessed). On the M3, this trim plate 'ramps up' about 3/16" higher to meet the knob. The M3 trim plate might be the trick to making the gap disappear. I sent Jason an e-mail to confirm this? I am awaiting his response.

Note also that I got my knob (Part #65827839520) from Tischer for less than $46. Places charging more than this are ripping off people. This knob may still be on backorder from Germany. So, it may take a while to get.

Are you sure it is properly installed? I mean if you pull on it lightly during use does it come of? When you plugged it in the white idrive adapter did you hear a loud click sound?

Mine does not seat that high as yours, but was like that before I repositioned it horizontally and pushed down on it firmly until I heard the "engagment" click sound.

Hope this helps...

Note that my part was the M5 OEM knob form ebay..maybe ther is a difference with the M3...not sure about that...just a thought. In terms also of ergonomics it is night and day better that the original...much bigger diameter and that exclusive feel.. The aluminum texture matches also the trim ...both are brushed...just a bit different.

The knob shown in the pictures was definitely fully inserted into place. It would not come off unless you really pulled (or pried) it off.

I was at the dealership again yesterday. I really think the only difference with the non-M car is the black menu/knob escutcheon trim plate. It is definitely thicker. I think this thickness difference makes the gap disappear. Unfortunately, the M3 is not listed on RealOEM yet. So, I asked the guy at the parts counter for the number of the M3's trim plate. He proceeds to tell me (after what looked like research) that it is the same part number as the 335i! Either he must be lazy, or he is a complete retard because there is no way those two parts have the same number. I returned my M3 knob. I may try to go with the M5 knob.

Questions/comments about your M5 knob:
  1. Do you know if yours is a BMW OEM part (since it was from EBay)?
  2. The M3 knob is 2 5/8" in diameter. What is the diameter of the M5 knob? I thought I read that it was bigger.
  3. The underside of the 335i knob has a die-cast metal adapter. The underside of the M3 knob has a clear plastic adapter. Does the M5 knob also have a clear plastic adapter?
  4. The M3 knob has nearly no weight at all compared to the 335i knob. Despite it's appearance, the M3 knob is not a solid piece of aluminum. It is a thin piece of stamped aluminum with a plastic adapter. I think the 335i knob feels heavier because of it's die-cast adapter. Is the M5 knob like the M3 knob?
  5. The M3 knob looks like they made it to match the M3's blue-gray brushed aluminum trim. The M5 knob looks like it might be a better match for the brush aluminum trim in the E9X. I saw one yesterday at the dealership.
  6. Was the M5 knob a direct replacement, or did you have to do the adapter re-engineering described in some of the DIY's?
  7. Can you provide some pictures?

Sorry to resurrect this old thread but does any of you recall if indeed the m5 knob fit better than the m3 idrive knob without gutting it out?

When I had the old controller, I used the M5 Knob. No issue what so ever, didn't sit high or anything.
