535 iDrive Knob vs. 335 iDrive Knob

A friend just got a 535 with iDrive. I noticed that the iDrive knob doesn't have the software controlled electromagnetic resistance like my 11/06 build 335 has. It's just a knob with fixed 'clicks' for scrolling through the menus.
This seems like a cost reduction thing as the static knob is probably cheaper but I really like the way the 335 knob would give resistance based on how many menu items there were to scroll through.

Are brand new 335's still shipping with the old knob or is it now like the 535 knob?

No "haptic feedback" in new 335's.

"Haptic feedback" Is that what they call it? I really liked it although it was a bit buggy.

So, you're saying that new 335's coming off the boat don't have the haptic feedback???

I Have May build 335i coupe with Idrive, no Haptic.

I have never felt it on my 335i. I think its history now.

So how is your experience with the new "haptic-less" knob? Is it more responsive with the menu system? Since there is no feedback, does the knob continue to turn even if you've reached the end of the menu list? I liked the feedback particularly with the real time traffic list because I could scroll through the list and know when I reached the beginning without taking my eyes off the road because the knob would not turn any more.

I have a 335i sedan and it has feedback. It gives resistance when reach end of menus. Only the lag annoys me :/. They should really add touch screen on top of the idrive.

I think they eliminated haptic feedback (resistance at end of menu) for March '07 and later build dates. The menu seleection lag is probably a Java thing.

But what build date? I have an 11/06 build 335 and it has the feedback.
I believe the other posters are correct, it was removed in 3/07 and late production and is similar to the 535.

I have a 03/07 build and have no feedback on it. When I reach the end of the menu, it just keeps spinning.

Mine also just keeps spinning. Like someone already posted, it's very nice scrolling quickly through satellite.

Mine has feedback and when I reach the end of a page (though not the end of the list), I just have to hold it in that position and it continues to click and scroll until it gets to the end of the complete list. Wouldnt want to have it any other way.

For those without feedback, do you have to just continuously turning it to scroll through the lists?

Yes, or you can spin it like the video game "tempest".

That's what we need - a Tempest implementation on the Nav system

And you thought dialing while driving was bad...

Haha! Got a good laugh out of that!!! I'd never have guessed I'd see a reference to the game "Tempest" on E90 post! I guess that dates us. Everyone else who doesn't get it is just a kid.
