key symbol on steering column

What does the key symbol on the steering column signify? My friend noticed it yesterday. I couldn't answer his question.

In the event that the battery in your key is low and your car will not start, you hold the end of your key fob up against this symbol in order to start the car. I believe it passively powers the RFID chip in order to start the car in this scenario.

On a couple of occasions my car wouldn't recognize my fob/key.
I got a message to hold the key next to the steering column, where the symbol is.
