Collecting New Car Experiences
Hi all,
Good forum with good info, thanks for all your help whilst I've been lurking in the shadows. Having just signed up to become not only a BMW driver (I swore I'd never be one!) and also a brand new car owner (again, I never understood the point of it before), can you let me know what to expect when collecting my new car in eight or so weeks? How hard do the dealers try and push other products etc and what sort of discounts have you obtained in the past? I've already negotiated a 10% discount of anything from their brochure (golf bag, key fob etc). Thanks for reading. |

You will get the GAP cover and run flat tyre insurance pushed on you. I took the GAP out with mine last year not realising how expensive it was. I'd give it a miss with BMW and buy it from elsewhere. I didnt bother with run flat tyre insurance as it didn't look good value to me. I think you needed more than 2 punctures to break even, which is unlikely IMO.
Also, you dont have to take out these covers there and then. Take the info home with you a make a choice in a day or so. |

My dealer was pretty good, they did mention GAP and tyre insurance during the ordering stage but there wasn't any hard sell. Then when it came to collection day I took in quotes I got off the web for these from places like car2cover.co.uk and they matched the prices with no quibbles at all which surprised me. Reason I went for tyre insurance is that I had 3 punctures in 2 years on my E81 and easily spent more than the premium in replacements. Swings and roundabouts though like any insurance.
You might also find they automatically add something called 'BMW A Glaze' on to the quote for around £399. They did this on mine but when I queried it they explained it and were happy to take it off (I can probably get a professional detailer to do it better/cheaper). As to discounts, may depend on model/choice/timing but figures of 9-12% have been quoted.

Thanks for the replies so far, nothing short of expected so far - which is good!
Has anyone had the unfortunate experience of having to claim on their GAP insurance? |

I know someone that scored big time with GAP....they had it on a new car. Almost 2 years later the car was written off by some idiot, literally the last months of the GAP cover, and they were able to buy a brand new version of the car they just lost (new model had come out by then too). So can be a good thing. If you are buying on finance, it is a must.

3 years GAP cover can be bought for £150-£200 from Internet brokers. Essential on finance but also worth a punt even if buying cash. The chance to step straight back into a brand new car after 2 or 3 years makes the small outlay worth the risk. You may of course never use it but thats insurance.

Here's one I used to get BMW to 'price match' - www.car2cover.co.uk
You have to pick the terms you want but by way of an example, a 3yr vehicle replacement policy on a car valued between £25K-£50K with a 'no limit' claim is £259. Think my dealer was initially quoting over twice that.

When setting the claim limit on GAP insurance quotes, are you selecting the difference between the Glasses Guide and the invoice or the full value of the invoice? |

It is normally the top up between standard insurance pay out and either full invoice price, or outstanding credit settlement figure.
Typically you buy it in bands, like 10k, 20k, 30k, etc. The 20k will be more than enough. |

Its surprising what you do when picking up a brand new car, all common sense seems to go out of the window for an hour when you get caught up in the hysteria of it all. Keep a level head guys when picking up your new car............ |

"Just give me the keys...I'm off" Is normally what I say
Don't forget to give the car a proper inspection.....I was too hasty to drive off in my Merc last time and found a small dent in the bonnet later that evening. I had been to the shops in it so couldn't be prove it was there when I picked it up.....I did park miles from anyone at the shops, so was pretty sure it was there from new. |

They tried to sell me all sorts of stuff and I declined the lot.
I have return to invoice cover with Lombard. I basically pay £10 a month and just renew the contract whenever I change the car.

When considering GAP, bear in mind:
1. your "normal" car insurance may provide "new for old" for cars up to a year old anyway; 2. even 3rd party GAP products are being sold by businesses trading for profit. The proper role of insurance is to protect you against a risk you could not otherwise bear. If you have spare cash in the bank, you don't need GAP. |

If I had 'spare' cash in the bank, I'd be buying a fully loaded M5 not a 328i (nice as it is)
(and I'd still take out GAP insurance on it)

I must admit...I hate insurance products, I never insure things like mobile phones, sky box, etc. ....but I actually like GAP.
Trust me...there is nothing like losing your cherished car in an accident. That is bad enough, but then when the insurance company offer you less than it is worth anyway......a double blow. |

You only have to look at the scale of misselling of PPI to see that general (i.e. non-life) insurance has become a bloated sector of a morally bankrupt financial services industry (and I'm a lawyer working in that industry, so it's not like I'm some nutter ranting from the outside). Sometimes you do get a bargain on these kinds of general insurance, but it's rare, because their admin overheads and required profit margin are too high. The only time I've ever felt like I "got one over on them" was when I bought an expensive and complex Bosch condenser dryer (4 active kids: nightmare !) and took out a Domestic & General 5 year extended cover on it: it was £69 and, at 4 loads a day, I saw the breaking of that machine as a challenge we could definitely rise to..... |
