Yeah, go for it. It's a bmw, not a Honda. HPFP is under control, and there are no common expensive repairs that currently affect the n54. Coils and Injectors are relatively cheap, and the waterpump replacements are across the board on the 3 series. Turbos are not known for failing.. it used to be that the early 07s would develop wastegate rattle, but it's not something that should concern your 2010 n54. I'm not saying it's a reliable car, but it's not a money hole either. $500 a year should cover repairs and maintenance easily (assuming you're not doing bs $250 oil changes at the dealer and $400 spark plug replacements) |

yea sorry for butting into your thread, but it all depends on the actual 335 that you're looking at. Most important is mileage, how many owners, financed or leased, maintenance history, what maintenance needs to be immediately done. If all things are good, go for it!

According to Consumer Reports, the 2010 335i has a "worse than average" repair record. Older ones tend to be "much worse than average". But that is probably due to the HPFP issue, which by itself is rated "much worse than average", which would drag down the overall ratings.
I think it depends on the following: (1) How has the car been treated? Some on these boards believe in breaking them in with a "drive it like you stole it" philosophy. And some that lease figure "I can drive it very hard because I'm turning it in before the warranty runs out". But the vast majority probably treat their cars well. (2) Has the car been modded to get more HP and torque? Who knows what the long term consequences of that are? (3) Have the fluids been changed regularly, especially the engine oil? (4) Has the car been tracked or raced on the street? (5) If it's from a cold climate, has salt caused any rust? The bottom line is that: - It's important to get used cars checked out by experts on the make and model. - 335i's are probably going to have more problems than most. - Is it worth the extra inconvenience and expense to enjoy the thrill of spooling up those turbos and driving a great sports sedan or coupe? |

I wouldn't buy a lease returned 335i. I'd only buy a 335i from a private party you can meet to find out how the car was broken in, driven and maintained. My car has been problem free over 5 yrs but many aren't.

I would personally be hesitant to buy any ~2 year old car with >50,000 miles. But if the car comes from a reliable source and has complete maintenance and service records I don't see it being a huge issue. As a general rule these cars are finicky and cost more to maintain properly than other makes/models. My personal advice would be to look for a car that still has some warranty (factory or CPO) available and lower miles, even if it's a year or 2 older.

Most important in my opinion would be getting a complete inspection done by a competent mechanic that you trust. They extended the warranty on the turbos due to wastegate failure to 8 years 82k! You'll be fine with everything else, just make sure you maintain it right!
BTW... I just took my car in for slight wastegate rattle on cold starts! They are replacing my turbos haha. Took the car in with FBOs. I was shocked.
