I'm not sure if you have but I think all bmw have brake light together with rear fog light. When you brake hard than fog light comes on with brake lights for other drivers to see you braking hard.
That I got in my e91

There are 2 brake lights. I had the same problem. They seemed to work but the warning was there. As it is an intermittent warning you should look at the bulbs and if one looks a bit dark/dirty then it is on the way out.

Had the same thing last week. Bulb failure light came but both brake lights were working then realized they have two bulbs. Element looked alright but bulb was blackened changed bulb problem sorted.

I am not sure if your plastic rear light bulb holders are the same type they use for US E-92s, but for '07 up to mid '09, there were some problems with the bulbs wiggling loose from going over bumps. It would throw the brakelight malfunction message but no bulbs were burnt, they just had to be pushed back in and they were fine for a month or so. They fixed them under a TSB with newly designed holders.

i'm getting this to, 2008 e91 325d

the error code 136 comes up implying the left rear brake light is gone, but all the bulbs are working and look good, have taken them in and out and swapped around, but the bulb failure warning is still on the dash

i'm going to change all 4 bulbs tonight and see what happens

regards kathy

Have you checked the bulbs in the boot lid itself? Last time I had that error it was one of those instead of one in the main cluster.
