Unhappy Am I getting screwed? Car is at the mechanics

Hey guys!

I recently dropped off my car last week at a well known local mechanic. I originally dropped it off to have the fuel pump and fuel pump sender/relay replaced but they called me this morning to tell me that my starter died.

What are the odds of this happening?? I wish I could have done the work myself but I had surgery on my shoulder and really had no choice but to drop off my car. Am I getting screwed?

Thanks for any feedback.

Guess it depends on if your starter died. If they are well know and you trust them I would say your starter died. Guess you could go try to cranck it to see if the starter works?

Tough to tell. We've seen our fair share of coincidences (cars in for ECU tunes that all of a sudden blow an ignition coil) so it does happen. Really depends on how well you trust your shop.

I have an 06 325i I bought in March with 65k miles on it. On the carfax, it showed the starter was replaced last year. Idk if this is an issue with these cars, but it can happen I suppose.

only way to know is to ask for your old starter and have someone examine it to see if it really is bad

It's possible it could have burned out no fuel and cranking the engine over and over multiple time without a break in between could have ruined it

BMW should have a parts warranty. If carfax states starter was already replaced, ask the SA to pull up & print the service records for your car.

If it was replaced recently like (mine was at 55k) it should not fail that soon.

my starter gave indications of pending death way before it died.

i would hit the start button and get hesitation, then a slow crank. after a few months of this it finally went out.

it definitely was not a sudden thing.
