Yellow overheat, then red, limp, but....
Car basically shuts down, but then I can start it right back up and be on my way. If this is water pump failure, why does the issue not remain after I stop and start again? This has happened 3 times over the last week or so.

Because when you restart the car, you are restarting the water pump. You need to replace it.

I would avoid doing this cuz your are risking your engine's life. Engines worst nightmare is overheating. I know you did not want to hear this but its time fo replace your water pump. Replace Thermostat while you at it. I am already starting my savings to buy mine too since I am at 95k miles. How many miles you have?

Change water pump ASAP! Don't keep driving it around while it's overheating.

Go to the maintenance section and search on water pump. Read the several threads on the subject, as it has been covered extensively, to understand the failure of the pump. In your case have the car scanned with a BMW scan tool and look for water pump failure codes. If there are any, then replace the pump.

So it seems like the water pump works when the car is started, then fails, then the temp gets to the point where the overheat light comes on so it is genuinely at the point of overheating. But restarting the car resets the water pump and allows you to drive around until the above cycle repeats itself again?

The exact same symptoms of when my water pump had failed. Hopefully you're under warranty still. $50.00.
Get that sucker in and fixed! |

Pull codes. 2E81, 2E82, 2E83, and 2E84 are all indicative of a failing pump.
Does the fan turn on full speed at all upon startup after overheating? Regardless at the underlying issue as to why the pump is turning off, have it changed out with a new thermostat. The rate at these go, it should be a preventative maintenance recommended by BMW. Also, If the pump does restart every time you restart the car, let it run at idle (assuming the pump is running) for a bit.... If your throwing a red overheating symbol and limp, the water pump is completely off and not pumping any coolant through the block. |
