What's the difference between the N20/N26

Hi Guys

I'm looking into leasing a new 328i Msport but I recently saw a thread about how there's an N20 and N26. I wanted to know if one is better than the other or which one I should get. Any info is greatly appreciated I'm in SoCal.

Thanks
Austin

It's pretty much all about emissions.

It's not really a big deal either way.

It was the same with my Vw CC, there is a 2.0L dubbed CCTA and one dubbed CBFA and it was easier to do mods like downpipes and intakes on one vs the other.

The N20 is having an easier time with the aftermarket compared to the N26.

It's also been said that 6spd manuals are all automatically N20.

Ok thank you for the info. I mod all of my cars so I wasn't sure if one would be better than the other. How would I know if it's the N20 vs N26. Can you tell by looking under the hood or would it say on the sticker?

N20 has a physical bypass valve while the N26 is electronically controlled.

You can also check your build date. Assuming you purchased the car in CA, if build date is March or newer (I believe March was the cutoff), it should be N26.
