The current exchange rate is R6-70 for every 1$ you want to buy.

Thus R320 000-00/ R6-70 per $ gives you $47 761-19.

What could I have bought in the US or else where for $47 761-19?

Feeling a bit ripped off.

The msrp of a fully loaded 330i in the US is about $48k. This includes every option except active steering or active cruise control, which I don't think are very popular options in the states due to their high cost. The average person with some negotiating skills should be able to get $1-2k knocked off this price, making the car $46-47k. Then add sales tax and other related fees, which varies from state to state. In my state, sales tax is 6%, resulting in an additional $3k, making total cost about $49-50k. These are just estimates, but it gives you an idea.

It does seem that you paid excessively. R320k for a 320iS. I am paying R345k for a 325iA exclusive with quite a few extra bells and whistles too. My only odwnside, is, I have to wait up to six months. Why? Cause in SA, 70% of the cars that are manufactured here, get shipped overseas.

You really can't compare these things. Each country has different rules. In Ireland and Holland they have a special tax of nearly 50% on top of the normal (pre-tax) cost of the car. This means your €30,000 costs more like €50,000 by the time you add BPM (this tax) and 19% sales tax... there's always someone who's worse off.

I think it would be fair to say that taxes are often the main difference in prices between countries. Distance to travel and volumes of cars sold should account for most of the rest. Getting a car to SA would be pricey and I'm sure not nearly as many cars are sold there as in NA. Competition between dealers should, in theory, mean that the prices of cars are kept down. I doubt it's the dealers that are raking in these differences in prices.

So no use feeling 'ripped off'. Either move countries or elect a government that brings down these extra taxes.

My only dispute is that the E90 is produced and manufactured in South Africa Roslyn Plant, so as far as distance and import duties are concerned And Secondly, most of our vehicle manufacturers in the country have been taken to the competition commission board for price fixing and have all paid hefty fines, BMW, MERC etc....

So thats probably why I have an excuse to feel ripped off :mad: :mad:

Commission drops price-fixing bomb


The Competition Commission claims it has found evidence of widespread price fixing and anti-competitive practices in the South African motor industry, and on Tuesday announced that seven manufacturers would be referred to a tribunal for adjudication.
If found guilty, BMW SA, Citroën SA, General Motors SA (GMSA), Nissan SA, Volkswagen SA (VWSA), Subaru SA and DaimlerChrysler SA (DCSA) could face an administrative penalty of up to 10 per cent of their annual turnover, including their exports, the SABC reported on Tuesday night.

The commission, which had been conducting an investigation of the motor industry since mid 2004, said evidence had revealed that DCSA, BMW, VWSA, GMSA, Nissan and their dealers had contravened Section 5(1) of the Competition Act by entering into franchise and dealer agreements which contained a number of restrictions that impacted negatively on competition in their operative markets.

"We are still to finalise the decision in respect of Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa,” said commission spokesperson Menzi Simelani. "The restrictions that were placed on dealers relate to ... the selling of new vehicles to unauthorised agents, the selling of new vehicles to exporters as well as active out-of-area marketing and selling of new vehicles."

That's nothing, I just ordered my 330d with just about every sensible option and paid 76k euros. That's more than 100k US$ !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Talking about rip off!!!

I live in the Netherlands by the way.... :mad: :mad: :mad: Makes me seriously consider moving to SA or the USA... How's the weather there?

Well at least we can sympathise
Weather here is extremely good, going into winter and the temp here is still 19 C/ 67F. People complain in winter if it gets to 10C/50F
Summer is nice Ave 86F
(So never too cold never too hot)
