Security Software Update

Just come back from my local Dealer (for something completely different).
When I asked about any security updates, and if I needed to register or if it would "just happen" - he tells me that the update is available next week. So I've booked the car in on 19th for a little warranty work, and they'll be doing the update then.
So I'll have to move the OBD port back to it's proper spot. Will I put it back to it's hidden location afterwards?? Yes, probably

Mike,
Would you be able to ask them further details?
And how does this make our cars secure?

Across the pond, few vendors are updating cars with 47.1 software and they claim that it covers the security loopholes. On asking further details, none of them could give proper explainataion what it covers and how it works.

From everything i have read and heard, this is not a real fix for the problem. My local dealer state it will be available in 2 weeks time and have confirmed that it resolves the issue of the windows dropping which BMW have publicized as being the cure to the problem.

The window can still be smashed and a key programmed through the OBD port without triggering the alarm as per we all know is happening. When i pushed this with my dealer they gave me the usual sales pitch straight from BMW..... "our research shows this is the way vehicles are being stolen and this will prevent that method".

Realistically a waste of time mod but if you dont have it done, its a potential cop out for insurance companies if the worst happens.

Came back from service today. I saw a letter bulletin on his desk. Kind of read it without there premission( i can read upside down) it was about the servurity problem reported on watch dog. I asked, he said he check my car to see if i need it done. Then he said my car don't need it done.. My car is 08 May which falls into the year bracket.

Not happy.

I'd agree with that.

I disagree with that.

Only a tiny minority of UK owners are on here and are aware of what's going on to any level of detail (maybe a few on PH forums etc too)

A few hundred thousand more may have seen watchdog's informal entertainment article about it, or have chatted about it at work.

But until BMW write to me with a recall notice on my car for a compulsory update then there is no way any insurer could even mention it.

had my car done today while sump gasket/oil change was done, they confirmed the update just removes the window roll down. Barely seems worth it from a security upgrade perspective but as I've never used that feature it's not like I'm going to miss it...

What is this window roll down? Is it the remote drop fuction you get by holding the unlock button (I like that) or is it that slight 0.5mm drop you get when you open the door so that the glass moves out of the seal (allowing you to actually open the door?

Any other uodates apparent with this? Anything to iDrive?

I'm also curious about the blocking of ECU reflashes, is it likely it locks out the ECU to those?

just like holding the unlock button, but its when you use the key in the drivers doorlock (the what?) and hold the key in the open direction it opens the windows / sunroof.

'comfort opening' its called.
