Could someone please identify this?

Does anyone know what this thing is in the engine? I've spent the past hour trying to figure it out... Blow off valve? Exhaust valve? It's driving me crazy!!!

My guess is bypass valve- modern turbos have bypass valves which are like a blow off valve that recirculates.

I believe that is the vacuum operated wastegate. When vacuum is applied, it opens the flap on the turbo to release boost.

You've got it.

My car has an N26, so this is electro-mechanical rather than vaccuum operated, but on the standard N20, BMW uses a pretty run of the mill twin scroll turbo w/vacuum-operated internal wastegate; only difference is the operation between N20/26.

It is called an actuator. A wastegate is different, but they do similiar jobs. The actuator pushes the flap open when the turbine gets to the set boost to allow for some of the exhaust gases to bypass the rear turbine wheel, so it doesn't keep spinning to infiniti and blow the engine / the turbo up.
