DIY: Hamann Style Lip installation

Couldn't find a DIY for a HM Style Lip installation on an F10, so decided to make one after asking around for advice.

Tools used:
  • Microfiber towels + Rubbing Alcohol
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Socket Wrench
  • 3M double sided adhesive
  • 8 bolts, 8 nuts,
  • 16 washers, 8 lock-tight washers

1. The lip's holes should perfectly line up with the existing holes of your M-tech bumper. Remove any existing hardware from the bottom of your bumper.

2. Prep the hardware for the install. You'll need 8 bolts with 8 nuts. 4 go in the corners and 4 go in the middle in my setup.

On the sides, I put the bolts from the inside of the bumper facing down and the nut at the bottom. In the inner 4, the bolts went upwards with the nut being on top.

Four bolts on the sides:
Nut <- Lock-tight washer <- Washer <- HM Lip <- Bumper <- Washer <- Bolt

Four bolts on the middle:
Bolt <- Washer <- HM Lip <- Bumper <- Washer <- Lock-tight Washer <- Nut

3. Clean the surface of the lip and the bottom of your bumper with rubbing alcohol and microfiber. Let it dry. Then place the 3M two sided tape on the front and sides of the bumper and peel off the red film. If you make a mistake and need to take it off, roll off the tape (don't pull on it).

4. You'll need two people to make the install easy. Once the tape is peeled off, have a friend hold one side (without pressing it against the bumper so the tape doesn't stick) while you put on the other side. Since the side bolts are hanging from the top, you need to align the holes and let the two bolts come through, then put on the washer, lock-tight washer and finally the nut. Use your finger to press down on the bolt from the top as you initially tighten the nut with your other hand. Repeat this for the other side. Once all four bolts are secured, use the socket wrench to tighten it. I was able to get all four very tight. The lock-tight should prevent them from getting loose easily.

5. For the inside four holes, you need a bolt with a washer to go from the bottom through the holes of the lip and the bumper. Then from the top, reach underneath the car and put a washer and lock-tight washer onto the bolt, then a nut. Secure all four bolts and tighten with your fingers. Then finally put the socket wrench on the nut (there is enough room above the bottom of the bumper to stick on the socket wrench and hold it tight so the nut doesn't turn as you tighten the bolt from the bottom with a screwdriver. Alternatively you can hold the bolt in place with a screwdriver and tighten the nut with the socket wrench. Both worked for me.

7. Finally, clean up and post pictures!

Big thanks to my buddy Jack (@jyerabutar from e46fanatics) who helped with the install.

Nice write up. Almost exactly how uninstalled the CF lip on the E92 M3. Now I am just trying to decide on which lip to install. Debating between the BMW Performance CF front spoiler and this one.

I have a question about the 3M Tape. The 3M double sided tape with the red backing comes in 3 different strengths... 5lb (Clear), 10lb (Gray), and 20lb(Dark Gray/Blackish). It's the gray 10lb one, correct?

I would get the best one. I forgot which one I used, but the tape didn't stick at all. The lip is currently only attached through the hardware on my car (locktite really holds it in place ).

SirNicholas, so you didn't use the other pre-drilled holes on the lip, which are intended for self-tapping screws. You only used the ones on the rear edge of the lip, which perfectly line up with the holes on the bumper underside, correct? So if the 3M tape isn't doing anything, basically your lip is being held by just the screws you placed on the rear edge as per the pics.

Mine only uses the 4 oem screws in the rear center and then 2 bolts, washers and nuts on the outside edges, no self tapping or non oem holes for my setup. This holds the lip fine on its own but there is a gap on the front edge so I use 3m molding tape to keep things tight.

There seems to be a few different reps sold - some with or without additional pre drilled mounting holes for self tapping screws. The one I got does have these holes for the very front edge of the lip but since I don't want self tapped holes in my bumper (for when I decide to change lips) I currently use double sided tape. The reps have different fits due to different molds used so you'll have to experiment on how much tape to use, where to place the tape and what kind (3m molding tape available at retail stores or one of 30 different 3m VHB models available online only).

So with the 3M tape, you were able to address the gap issue without using screws and it's holding up pretty well? Thanks for sharing. Good to know.

Sorta...

I currently have 3m molding tape (from Autozone) placed only on the center section towards the front of the lip but not so far up that you can see the grey 3m tape. The issue my rep has is that the gap from the lip and bumper needs 2 layers of 3m tape stacked to make strong contact with the lip surface and bumper surface. After a month of monitoring it, I'm seeing that the doubled up take is starting to separate. The 3m molding tape and the adhesive is designed for a very specific surface energy - in this case glossy or very smooth surfaces like paint. Since I'm trying to stick 2 pieces of tape together, it eventually will fail. My next plan is to use a small shim (1inch x 6 inch long x 1/8inch thick plexiglass strip) to adhere the 3m molding tape to, then use that sandwiched between the lip + bumper... in theory this should work and solve the problem. If this does not work, I was going to buy 3m VHB... that will work FOR SURE... google it or check it out on Youtube.

Been following this thread and admire everyone's efforts to install this spoiler so there are no gaps. I picked up the spoiler from the ebay seller's warehouse last week in SoCal. Went to Home Depot and bought the suggested mounting hardware and 3M tape. The holes line up perfectly and the quality looks good. However, I found the install to be a bit challenging given the protective stuff tucked under and attached to the bumper. After a couple of beers I tapped out on this particular DIY mod project and will head to my mod shop guy where they can put it on a rack and install it properly.

Finished product. They removed the front bumper and used the suggested hardware. Looks good and fits well.

With or without 3M tape?
