Limp Mode Wtf?

Ok - I have had PROcede V1.47 for about 3000 miles already. LOVE IT!!!!

Never had a problem with the car or limp mode...never threw any codes....NOTHING.

Weather has been right around 90-100 for the past month here, still...NO PROBLEMS.

Took my car to the dealership (with PROcede installed) yesterday to fix a scratched rim and get an oil change. NO problems. Delearship never said anything to me about the PROcede...said the car was great.

Drove it home (in 100 degree heat and high humidity) and the engine temp never got above 220....strange b/c normally it stays around 240 no matter what the conditions are. But hey...a lower engine temp can't be all bad...can it?

So I am driving into work this morning and hit the gas to pass some traffic and BOOM...LIMP MODE. (Outside temp was about 74 - engine temp was about 210-220.)

Is this just a coincidence that this happens right after I took my car in for service? Or is something a miss here? It just doesn't add up in my book.

Thoughts? Insights?

Your 1/2 Engine Light and "Engine Malfunction/Reduced Power" notification went away, right? If so, then don't worry about it...you didn't reach the boost target, and Shiv has said that v2.0 will all but eliminate this problem with v1.4x. As a frame of reference, I've had PROcede now for almost 5 months and gone into this "temporary" limp mode 3x...no big deal.

The light went on about 1 mile before I got off the expressway....so as soon as I got off and got to the traffic light, I shut the car off...restarted it and the warning light went away.

Being concerned...I tried to hit the gas hard in between lights (not easy to do in the downtown area) to try to make the limp mode come back on. Wasn't sure if it was an isolated incident. Didn't come back on.

I just find it shady that this happened right after I took my car in for service.

Is there something they do (ie..flash the computer) that could mess with this.

oh yeah...and when I went to play my ipod (connected to the car) this morning..it wouldn't work. I had to remove the ipod and reset it. When I got it back on the battery was almost dead. It makes me think the delaership did something with the electronics.

Just seems shady if you know what I mean.

I think the cause may be weather or gas quality related. I also got limp mode 3000 miles after Procede install. No one knows the actual cause (i.e. why boost targets aren't reached) as there's no OBD codes generated. It's not a big deal in that there is no damage done (presumably), but really sucks when it happens with others in the car and they're all recommending having the dealer look at it.

No; not the dealer...boost target related to PROcede; wait for v2.0 and don't worry about it.

Nothing to do with taking it in for service.

Any comments on the lower engine temperatures I am experiencing since yesterday? Doesn't seem right considering it's 100 degrees outside.

I am going to take it out to lunch here in a few minutes and I guess I'll see what happens.

Took it out to lunch and no problems...but then again I really didn't hit it that hard.

Temp was 96 outside and engine temp got to 230 today...10 degrees hotter than yesterday.

strange.....

If you trip another limp home mode under boost, just load up the LBT version of the map. Simple as that. As for the oil temp "issue", there's really nothing strange going on. Oil temp isn't like water temp in the way that the temp is not regulated as finely. Completely normal.

Thanks Shiv...I'll upload the LBT if the issue resurfaces.

Most likely it won't before you have v2.0; it's happened to me 3x in almost 5 months. No big deal.

It seems to happen to me if I change gas stations. All top tier, thinking might be an ecu adaptation issue.

Did the dealership fill your tank up after the service? My guess is it could be related to poor quality gas.

Nope....they didn't fill it up. Heck, they didn't even wash it like they were supposed to. (on their behalf I got my rim fixed and they didn't want to get the finish wet so I can understand the not washing)

I goto the same same shell station by my house for every fill up. Get the V-Power 93 octane every time.

I have taken the car out of town a few times...chicago..nashville...but I always find a shell station along the way and get the 93 octane.

Who knows...hopefully an isolated incident. I plan on getting V2 (hopefully soon) and that should take care of the issue.

Since i've had the fuel pump replaced, i've never had an issue with throwing a CEL. Before the new pump i had one or two.

question to OP, were you in 4th gear by any chance doing about 60 and then punched it a little bit, cause I got it the other day and I remember the exactly what I was doing at the time.... could this be an issue with the boost targets not hitting if your in too high of a gear and attempt to pass...

as a matter of fact I remember giving a little throttle, then letting off as a SHORT BUS cut me off , then I throttled it again to pass and boom... limp...

It may or may not be boost conditions. I had 3 fault codes in my memory that resided. THe minute i cleared it, i got a limp mode with some DSC failure. It may vary from what you get. BUt ever since, I restarted the car, no problem. Cleared the code from the fault memory, it comes back. Weird thing is that it always come back when i use it in the morning when the day before is when i cleared the fault codes. Barely 5 mins, Bam! CEL Light. Restart and it goes away. I also drive very hard and tried to induce the same limp mode to see if it was anything related to boost. NO. I have been running my car 2 over months since that CEL light and nothing. I have a strong feeling that when dealerships do a diagnostic check and reset the fault codes, this is the case for some. At least for me. I dont know whats the vibe on this but my error codes are as follows:

DSC – 5E1A Engine Management Interface EGS – 51A6

Engine Signal – Engine Speed Incorrect – Fault Currently not present – Fault would not cause a warning lamp – PT-CAN B2460_GSBUS_TU

DME – 2DED Power Management, closed circuit current violation – Closed-Circuit Current Fault –Fault currently not present – Energy Diagnosis B6131_89112

If you ask me, i think its something to do with the continuos power that is being fed to the procede which creates a log in the ECU memory indicating a power leak. Its nothing of course but once you clear it, you get it back. I am stumped too but i do not believe this problem is replicated on all cars. UNless someone who has a BMW diagnostic computer can clear their ECU fault memory if they have any fault codes and try to see if anything happens.

I am of opinion that Shiv will fix this problem in V2 with a ignition on relay box as seen here.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...68&postcount=1

5) The PROcede now being powered by switched ignition power instead of constant power. This will eliminate the power consumption notice that some cars have triggered.

AFAIK, the power consumption notice is only seen on the 535i/xi with procede installs. But i have read that even the stock 535i/xi throws that notice. So its really hard to tell whats what. BUt from my experience, it has nothing to do with the procede functional purpose. It works great and it works flawlessly for me so far with no CEL light thrown during cruise or full throttle. I think V2 will really neaten up alot of stuff and make the procede far more trouble free and limp free for those who are not able to achieve their boost targets.

Maybe Steve Dinan will buy a sack of Chai Latte Leaves for Shiv over a romantic lunch soon?

Some people get a limp mode, stop the car and shut down, and never get it again. It's just like Our Man Shiv said, you missed a boost target, nothing more.

I got my first one ever yesterday, right where Shiv has said it happens in the 2-3.5K rpm range in higher gears. I shut down and restarted and it never happened again. It was also 110 degrees / 40% humidity here yesterday but the car never broke 240 degrees and I drive this car... I'm running 4 gallons of 100 octane and the rest is 91.

Unless I start getting limp modes daily (highly unlikely), I'm going to leave V1.47 in. As soon as V2.0 is available I'm going to upgrade it anyway.

Cheers!

Got my third half engine last week. Just restart and continue to have fun. I'll wait for v2 before I change anything.
